Drill the thumb oval.

Put your thumb in all the way.

Don't squeeze the ball.  Relax.

If it still swells, then before you start bowling, wrap a towel around your thumb and squeeze the sides of your knuckle.  What that does is it forces the blood out of your thumb, and the swelling is temporarily reduced.  As you bowl, the thumb stays in the same shape, and after you have stopped bowling, your thumb will swell up to the same golf ball that it was.

Use the one above and try running it under cold water and applying pressure.  This will do the same as above, but should keep the swelling down after you bowl.  Also, keep you thumb dry. You generate some moister on you thumb while bowling which can cause you to feel like your thumb has swollen, when it is really just sticking because of moisture.

I don't know if you drink alcohol while you are bowling, but that will also cause your fingers to swell.
