John Amend: The man who wants to change the face of bowling!
« on: March 24, 2011, 08:36:55 AM »
Amend is hatching a scheme to replicate this sense of delight. His idea is to build a chain of private bowling centers, like country clubs for bowling. Members would pay an initiation fee, monthly dues, and user charges. There would be a wine cellar and an in-house chef to offer fine cuisine, a resident pro to provide lessons, and an event director to organize anniversary parties and business closing dinners. Amend envisions groups of urban professionals dining out at his lanes, toasting strikes with glasses of vintage Bordeaux.

Amend's bowling centers would have three separate banks of lanes so that singles, for example, wouldn't have to bowl alongside children. He says each two-story complex would cost about $15 million to build. He vows to break ground during 2011 for the first -- presumably somewhere in Dallas -- and bankroll the pilot center himself. He envisions a nationwide chain, with some bowling centers serving as anchors for residential communities.

There has been talk of this around town for quite a while.  Nothing really new.   There is only one bowling center in the city of Dallas so any growth would be nice.  Even the suburbs are getting thin now days.

Nice idea but in this economy I'd be hesitant. Seen a lot of golf course/country clubs going under because people are cutting back.

Be good, or be good at it.
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

Not sure for the USA, but I doubt that you can make bowling as "elitist" as a golf club - or find a target group nationwide that s willing to pay accordingly? This has been discussed a few times here in the past, and I'd wonder if it was a sustainable business idea. The target group probably has a pair of private lanes in the basement...

I would think that you would have to do away with children al together to make it work.  21 would have to be the min age, and even then you would have to act right.

I would pay to bowl somewhere  that I didn't have to worry about stepping in something when you are bowling from a party that just left that pair.  Or being able to practice without hearing people acting crazy.

I am taking it that one of the banks of lanes would be for the resident pro and or practice only.

Have you ever been to or heard about the Detroit Athlectic Club?  Yes its different, but we bowled there about 5 years ago and the bowling center part of the Club was beautiful.  But this would not work for the everyday bowler like me.
