Johnny Petraglia scoring system
« on: April 12, 2009, 05:50:16 AM »
Not a bad system. The only flaw I see is if a bowler throws a gutter ball on his first shot there should be some kind of penalty. A gutter/2nd ball spare shouldn't be the same as a 9/2nd ball spare. A first ball gutter should net a 1 or 2 point penatly at the very least.

A 9/ is the same as a 0/ if your on a strike in regular scoring too, so really dont see a problem with it.

0/ the entire game and get a final score of 100.

9/ the entire game and end up with 181 (since you don't get the "fill" ball).

Stupid scoring system, but that's just my opinion.

It is stupid.

But even the bowling powers must think normal bowling is so boring that no one wants to watch it.

I wasn't a big fan of it. I went in thinking I would be, and was unpleasantly surprised. The only part of it I liked was that you had to keep shooting until you made all the pins on the deck, and if someone locks up mentally, you could be there for 6 or 7 shots -- especially if you're like me and get the yips on the 10-pin from time to time.

Hopefully this thing doesn't catch on.

Did not really care for the scoring format.  I'm sure CDB liked it because it allowed her the chance to get back into the game.  Wonder how it would have turned out if they would have bowled it on one of the other patterns?

and shouldn't triple, spare, spare, count for more than strike, spare, strike, spare, strike??

I like some aspects of the Petraglia system and dislike some. Nothing's perfect. It is interesting.

As for the show, they should not have been allowed to stay on one lane for their whole game.

Why?  Wasn't it fair for everyone since they all stayed on their same lane?  --  JohnP

I didn't care for the system. Thought it made the women's game a 'backyard game'. They had a plastic ball thing for the guys, now let's see if they'll make the men do the system, if not, then it makes the women seem 'less'.

Just won't watch again if this's what they'll do to the ladies.

IT was interesting, but they could have done more:

1. Have it over 10 lanes with each having an unknown pattern.
2. Par is 2 under par is a strike.
3. Gutter is a +1 penalty.
4. Low bowler from the previous frame shoots last on the next frame (with the unknown patterns this works to the bowlers advantage.).

It could have been fun this way.

That scoring system is no better than then the normal one. Strikes still depend on pin position and pin consitution (not broken). Last week I had the front 9 with a pin in the right rack that stood crooked.. leaning one way or another and 10-15 degrees. In the 10th I get up an look at the rack and the pin is in the 6 pin position... leaning forward and to the right. I rerack. A team member said "you rerack in league"... I said "you dont?" He laughed and walked away shaking his head.

There is no effective way of scoring farely as long as there in no exactness in the topology. Every pinsetter sets pins with in 1/2" tollerences, flat gutter depths are allowed 1/4" inches in variance, pin decks are allow tollerence both front to back and left to right, lane surfaces are also allowed to have highs and lows, tilts bothe left to right and front to back. Why not have a screwy scoring system too.
