Jumping to adult leagues....
« on: May 07, 2008, 10:50:59 AM »
So its getting to the be the time that I jump to adult leagues.

This summer I plan on it and well the league is starting in very near future that I am currently planning on joining.

I am 17 though until June 7th, and I was curious, is there anything I need to know before I make the jump the adult league and I will be emailing USBC but does anyone have any information on the scholarship money program and will going to adult leagues and sanctioning as an adult effect my ability to claim my scholarship money that I have awarded, though not much every bit helps.

Thanks for any replies ahead of time.

I am doing the same thing, and im not entirely sure how to approach. The one thing I do know however is that it wont effect your scholarship money. The only restriction on that is that you must claim it in time.

Could affect your eligibility for other collegiate athletics.  If you play any other sports, that may be relevant.

Don't plan on playing anything except possible bowling in college, so I don't see a problem there. But im just curious as to if theres anything special I have to do, or just sign up for a league and give up my youth status.

if your under 18 you have to have parental consent.

Yeah, which ill be able to get easily, but is there anything specific I have to do through USBC, or is it handled by the league when I join?

Yeah I don't play any other sports so that isn't a problem. Thanks though for the replies thus far and I'm sure I won't have any issues with the parental consent, my parents actually brought it up to me about going adult this summer even though they don't bowl.

I'll let you guys know for future reference for others that will approach this situation when I get it all settled in the next few weeks.

Well heres and idea to ponder. Join a summer leauge that allows Adults and Youth bowlers. This will give you an idea if your ready to go to adults yet or not. If you do this which wont void your status of youth leauges and you have all summer long to figure out how to handle the situation before you make the change over.

thats the best thing to do.  there's three juniors im bowling with in an adult/youth league this summer.  they wanted to make the jump to adult leagues but were unsure.  so i told them to bowl with me in an adult/youth league to see if they're ready or not.  i think they need more time learning to adjust to tough shots and hopefully i could teach them a thing or two this summer.

Six years ago when I turned 18, I saw no advantage for me to stay in junior leagues.  Very, very little scholarship money was available in local tournaments, I wasn't good enough to win anything outside of my local area, almost no colleges around me had bowling teams (heck, my high school only had one my junior year, and that was only because I did most of the work recruiting people for it), etc.  I went up to adult leagues as soon as I was 18 and started winning jackpots, had more fun bowling against more than two or three other people at my talent level, etc.  I don't regret it at all -- I hated the youth bowling stuff around me.

Seven years ago when I turned 18, I thought about going adult and I'm glad I didn't. I started getting into more youth tournaments in my area and the neighboring states. For like 4 years I drove up and down the northern East coast doing youth tournaments. Had a lot of fun, made some good friends and made some scholarship money on top of it.

Even when I went adult at 22, there was a huge difference in bowling with the kids and bowling with the adults. Not too many youth come out and start kicking butt right away. You will have to work on it and it may take some time before you really find a good groove.

But everyone has their own experiences and their own circumstances. You have to decide whats right for you.

As far as moving up, you don't have to do anything that anyone doesn't have to do. Show up, join a team, fill out your sanction card. Any money awarded prior to then as scholarship money is still yours to use as permitted, as long as you use it by the "expiration date" set by USBC. Think I still have money that is good till 2009.
