Title: just another peeve
Post by: xrayjay on September 01, 2016, 10:59:36 AM
why do bowlers call bowling balls "pieces"? I admit, I did use the word long ago in a few post. But after some thought, it sounded odd. And the more I read them over the years - post/replies with that word, I stop reading those posts. Maybe I have to get used to it. Just like when I first got into online forums, I had a hard time getting used to posters who have very limited basic writing skills.

But the word "piece" just doesn't seem to fit when saying.... "I drilled up a new piece." A piece of what? Or, "I love this piece, I shot multiple 300's with it." Which of the 6 balls you carry are you referring too?

It's kinda like that guy who surfs on our turf and tries to talk like the locals making up his own lingo. Using the word "piece or pieces" instead of ball or bowling balls, just sound so Kook.

The End.  ;D

Not defending the use of "piece", but to be fair, you do see the incredible irony in this don't you?

Different jargon for different areas of the country/world. That's all there is to it. As long as I eventually figure out what everybody means it doesn't bother me much.

I use the term "marble" as in "I bought a new marble" or "Hey, did you get a new marble."

hahaha I did when I proof read my post, but just continued. Anyway, it seemed better than using the work "dork"...

To me, "piece" is a reference in only a few circumstances. The two that come to mind are chess and a$$.  ;D

Very true about coming from different parts, we all speak differently. I have an accent mixed with several Asian and pacific islander roots that my state side friends notice. Likewise, my boys from the islands say I sound like a Cali Dude. "NOOO WAAY DUDE!!"

But then, you are a "piece of work"; not as much as some but more than others.
No, don;t ask me where that came from, but i like it.

To quote Foghorn Leghorn, Groucho Marx, Curly(Three Stooges) and whoever else that might have said it, "I resemble that remark!"  ;D

Remember back in the old days balls with cores were referred as "2 piece".

Pretty sure it is short for piece of (bowling) equipment. That's generally how piece is used - as an object in a group of similar objects.

Oh, where do I begin?  I'm been bowling since the 1980s and I swear people just come up with new terms to sound smart when I just find them lame.  Here is a list of phrases and words I can't stand and will never say in my life:

1) Reading the lane.  What is this?  The ball can read now?  Just say reaction or something.
2) Midlane
3) Heads
4) Ringing 10
5) Flat 10
6) Hits like a bulldozer/truck.  My issue is that my ball is the only one that hits to where people lanes away look up.  All you guys roll the ball 15mph and the ball graciously pushes pins over.
7) Out of bounds.  There is nothing out of bounds.  In any other sport, that is where play is dead.  When you roll the ball past the 3 board, you aren't out of bounds.  That 0 still counts.
8) Sleeper.  The 8 pin is not sleeping behind the 2 pin.  It's just there.
9) Messenger.  It's the name of a Columbia 300 ball, not a pin.
10) Dead wood.  I called in the help desk this past summer and shouted "there is a pin laying in the gutter".  The lady responded with a "what and then hung up".  A minute later asked again and I regrettably said "dead wood lane 15".  5 seconds later the pin vanished.  Jesus!

That's probably the worst slang for a bowling ball I've ever heard in my life.  The "pill"?  My God.......

I was buying some chips one day and met one of the local bowlers there. He asked me if I bought any new "rocks" this summer and that his hammer scandal "hits like a freight train."

I couldn't help but do that "Blondie" look, a.k.a. the man with no name - the good, the bad, and the ugly. and stand there for 3 seconds before I replied.....

Jay,

Everyone has their favorite name for a ball, depending on how well he regards it or them or if he's just talking in general.

Personally,
I'd rather all guys keep their hands off my "balls" and out of my "holes".
Far too many balls seem to be rocks lately or just a plain POS, better suited for use as anchors. I do still have a few "gems" from the past hanging around.

About a dozen years ago, I went to watch a PBA Tour stop at a local center.  A qualifying block was just finishing and I was near a pair where Tommy Delutz was bowling. A local bowler was a big fan of his and had been following him from pair to pair during the block.

As he came off the lanes, he asked her if she used 15 lbs.  She replied "yes".  He said "Stick around, I have a Pebble for you."  I was thinking I've never heard of that ball.  I wonder when it came out?

Go over to the tennis forums, they call a racket a "stick."  I just call it a bowling ball and a tennis racket.

Well, they're just playing CYA. It can be a piece of gold, or a piece of... Well, you get the idea. I've had a couple of pieces of doodoo, and I was hoping they would be gold. Either way, they were pieces.
