Even "fun" leagues need a good set of rules

As winter league organizational meetings near, every league should make certain to have a good set of rules. Here are some guidelines to follow:

One thing that "fun leagues" need to realize is that there are still USBC rules of bowling that need to be followed........ like when a ball goes into the gutter and comes back out and knocks down three(3) pins this counts as ZERO pins knocked down. I know these leagues are just for fun but rules are rules. Every sport has them.........even at the "just for fun" level.

Had a center employee tell me after a bowler bowled on the wrong lane in a tournament, that had that been in league we could have just kept going and not declared the frames as dead ball. The scores would have just counted on the wrong bowler. Need more than good rules, but someone other than the center to know what to do when those pins get knocked down or the bowler throws on the wrong lane.

The problem with fun leagues in my  area is that when it comes to changing rules...nobody wants to do it. You hear complaining through out the year about this rule needs changed or that rule needs fixed. Then end of season, we have the meeting. Nobody wants to stick around so the vote to KEEP everything the same is brought up! Everyone votes "YES" and its the same garbage all over again next year.

Most league bowlers around here don't know the rules. They just show up and bowl. Rules only come into play if they feel or think someone has cheated them.

One sad thing is that USBC (and formerly ABC) don't always follow or enforce their own rules, so how can anyone expect a league to always adopt (and enforce) a good set of rules?

But one would hope that, as league organizational meetings are held, members will take the time to carefully ponder their existing rules and make sure that they are solid enough to ensure an efficient operation throughout the upcoming season.
