Just changed my span..
« on: March 18, 2004, 04:02:56 PM »
All,

I have recently lengthened my span by about 1/8th on both fingers. I just used a ball last night for the 1st time with the longer span and it felt pretty good. It seemed like I was able to clear the ball better and get some decent roll on the ball. Here is the story. I had my present ball driller just copy a ball last year when I first started using him and he had been doing that ever since until one day (3/16) I ask him to measure my span and he said it looked like I was about an 1/8 short on both fingers in his opinion. I ask him to check because I felt as if my span was to short. He suggested I try out the longer span and see what happens, so here I am..

Before I go and change all of balls to the new longer span, I have a couple of questions:

1. Do most of you like a loose or a stretched span? Why?
2. Is 1/8th gonna make that big of a difference?

Any comments would be appreciated..

I use and recommend the relax finger tip span.

Spans that are too long can physically hurt you and they exaggerate whatever your tendencies are. If you have problems dropping the ball then if your span is too long you will drop it more, if you stick then you will stick more.

Virtually none of the pros on tour use stretched spans. They bowl too many games and a stretch span will eventually hurt something.

In your case it depends on how long your span was in the first place. If you had a relaxed span in the first place an 1/8 inch will not matter much but if it was somewhat stretched then 1/8 is a lot.

With your thumb inserted fully into the ball lay your fingers over the finger holes. Without stretching the crease of your first knuckle should go at least ½ the way across the hole.

I'm in a similar situation.  My span is very relaxed and I've considered going to a longer span.  What are the advantages to lengthening ones span?
