Thinking about changing equipment
« on: February 12, 2012, 09:00:54 AM »
I have been using 16 lb equipment. Now that I'm nearly 55, the back isn't what it used to be and thinking of going to 15 lb equipment. Have been a life long Columbia man, but I'm considering any company. Any ideas? Thanks

At 78 I was still throwing 16 pound balls! Many of my friends and a few ball drillers suggested I drop down but  thought they were crazy! In 2009 I started having problems with my legs .. not related to bowling .. but aches and Gout .. I continued to bowl through the problems. At the time I was buying new balls just about monthly. On my own I started to buy 15 pounders. At first I wasn't happy with my performance .. it could have been my leg problems but I wasn't happy with the lighter equipment. After a while  (maybe a month) I was getting use to the new balls and future orders were only 15's.

I became very satisfied with the lighter stuff and now think that I was foolish not to change sooner.

Good luck to you!

I am 46 and just changed to 15 lb, not for any physical problems though
I was working on some timing issues and got a 15 lb in a raffle and tried it.
It helped my issues and now I switched them all over to 15 lb You dont sacrifice any carry at all
I dont notice it much unless i pull out an old 16 lb'r.
i still use a 16 lb yellow dot on the burn

Im a track fan, great stuff IMO
for the weak stuff, I have several "JET" balls, slick cover, and predictable
I ended up getting another one and drilled it pin down for the short sport.

I also just got a blue hammer replacing my natural, a must have for the old woods lanes I run into.

One advantage I found when I dropped to 15 lb equipment was I got more rotation on the ball, I was able to rev it up some more. My average went up after this.

I switched to 15 last year after throwing 16 for about 25 years and it's been a great switch!

As for company ... well, everyone makes great stuff nowadays, so you really can't go wrong with any company. I am pretty happy with Track and Roto Grip stuff personally, though probably my best ball right now is a Columbia Ransom Demand. You may want to check with your local pro shop (or the manufacturer websites) to see if any demos are scheduled for your area to test out new pieces by different companies.

I went from 16lbs to 14lbs 3 years ago.  Never looked back.  I do throw some 15's, but most of my stuff is 14lbs.  I am 38.
