Just looking for some opinions please
« on: June 02, 2015, 12:30:45 PM »
IF, your were a senior bowler with above average revs and slow speed (14+/- mph)and you were going to change your bowling line to something from inside to more like Liz Johnson, Walter Ray and Norm and go up the outside of the lane, and, if you used an extended finger wrist brace would you:

A.  Go with a ball that does not hook much (either weak of highly polished)

B.  Use a wrist brace that gives you more of an "up the back" release (like the Robby's)

I need to keep the wrist brace because of a past injury.

OR

C.  Just forget the whole thing and get a boat.

Now I know you're going to say it depends on the lanes.  Well where I bowl the lanes are never the same and change from bad to worse during the course of three games.  Lines that work for a couple of shots will suddenly disappear and the ball will either over-hook or just stop moving all together.  Most of the better bowlers refuse to even bowl in this house anymore.  My last outing I had eight splits and two washouts.  All of the splits were in the pocket.  That's like a whole game of opens.  With that in mind, I'm trying to figure out something that might give me a some kind of shot no matter what they do to the lanes.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

1. I am a senior bowler
2. I am rev dominant
3. My speed fluctuates between 13-14/mph
4. I am changing my bowling line from inside to outside, just to increase my options

Sounds like your lanes are extremely spotty, and inconsistent. In that case, I believe you are on the right track using a brace that gives you an "up the back " release. This tends to simplify your game and take a lot of variables out of it when you do have to adjust to the lanes because of their spottiness. However, I would tend to go with a medium to strong piece, rather than a weak one. If you are using a brace because of a past injury, then you are limiting the amount of revs you can impart on the ball, to begin with, so no need to compound that by using a weak piece too.

I really believe using a medium-strong piece would force you to learn when and where to move your feet when the lanes begin to break down. Also it would afford you the chances of learning how to use the dry areas to increase your carry. Please keep in mind, this will also force you back inside rather than limiting you to the down and in area.

If you are truly intent on staying in the gutter to ten area, than a shiny piece is the way to go. Just my two cents.

In addition to what Jesse said, I'd also consider a urethane ball. If you are on the slower side and rev dominant a urethane ball should still be strong enough.  I think a mild hook and smoother reaction to dry should compliment what you're trying to accomplish.

I think this all depends if you are dealing with fresh or salt water.

Going from a rev dominant inside track player, to a speed dominant outside track player, is going to be a lot more involved than you think.

It won't "feel" right, it won't look right, and you'll need a coach to tell you when you've actually done it correctly, because you won't be able to tell from experience.

And you'll have to practice this technique until it becomes as natural to you as what you are doing now.

Going from pitch and roll to dump and spin?

The boat will be much less frustrating.

I used to be a really good bass fisherman.  Even won some money a few times.  Why oh why did I ever go back to bowling.

A former Good Bass Fisherman here also. Age and health forced me to quit. Sold my Bass Boat and most of my fishing equipment. Only kept a couple of poles-reels and a few lures for "just in case"....  :)

If it was me I get a boat. Nothing beats fishing and hanging out.

Equipment choice is probably one of the lower priorities in making the switch you talk about.  Generating more ball speed, and changing your roll pattern to more end over end are major hurdles, and the degree of success you can have doing that will determine the optimal equipment for such a transition.

If you quit bowling, will you buy a boat from Brunswick Corp?

No.  Probably would look into a Ranger with an Evinrude/Johnson outboard.

Thanks for all the opinions.  Went to a different house today to practice.  That boat is looking better and better.

Sounds like we are bowling in the same house. I was bowling pretty decent and the past 3 weeks, I been averaging about 160. Old wood lanes, sport shot, spotty conditions.

I start out up the ten, and by the third game, I still can't find a consistent line. Hit solid pocket, then either go Brooklyn or through the nose.

I would buy a boat, but I get seasick.

The boat mentions are reminding me of an old co-worker who loved to fish from his boat.  His definition of fishing was dropping a hook in the water with no bait...and just floating for hours.......he said it was the most relaxing thing in the world.
