Maybe i should just go no thumb.....
« on: February 26, 2005, 12:57:44 AM »
For my normal league.  I've pretty much had it.  I'm sick of my incredible tweener hell.  Today, i literally had to change balls or hand positions multiple times, because everyone else who bowls my league plays it up the same line, which really f's up my line.  So i am constantly adjusting.  Not to mention, if i get on the ball at all, it jumps way hard and goes straight brooklyn.  I know i sound like i'm being a baby, but its true.  My current house matches up best to fluffers and strokers.  It's not fun to constantly shoot sub-500, when i go to any other house and average close to 200.  This house does not match up for me in the LEAST...  Even as a test, i threw one ball about 16.5 or 17mph (on qubica, which measures at the deck), with low revs up the back and i could still play a medium-small swing.  I've found out the only way to score is to fluff it about 12mph, with 200 rpm and play a small swing, or to throw it fast with revs playing about the 5th or 6th arrow to about the 1 board.  No kidding at all.  Since i have way too much natural power (my average spare ball speed is about 19 or so, when i throw it fast i get about 23 or so on average), there's no way i can do the 12mph fluff shot.  So i might have to finish THIS LEAGUE (note, this league, not switch over completely) as a no thumb bowler, and switch back for tournaments and stuff.  Just to finish out this season, as i'm leaving the house anyways after this league (for actual non-bowling reasons, but thats another story).

Anyone ever been forced to drastically change their style in order to score well in a certain house??

Monday nights in one house and Tuesday nights in another house force me to play two completely different styles. Mondays I can play with more side turn, more speed and a power down and in release. Tuesdays I have to play more up the back, slower ball speed and a super tight line to execute well.

And last Saturday while I was in NYC, I had to take all my hand out of the ball and throw it 22mph to even keep anything I had with me on the lane- plus throw back up balls for 7 pins if I wanted to make those.

Trust me Andy- your home house may frustrate you, but the conditions will make you a better bowler in the long run.

I'm going to play around with completely different styles.  High backswing, low backswing, all that kind of stuff.    I had always just assumed that i was just really bad, but i've figured out that my natural game just doesn't work so i'm gonna have to really change...

If you have as much power as you say, maybe you should look into a urethane or even, dare I say, a XXXL.  This will help eliminate over/under and erratic ball reactions on the lanes, and you should be able to exploit the hole these other guys are blowing in the shot.  Maybe you'll have to swing a little more than them through the oil, but if they're drying it out that much, you should have plenty of recovery at the break point.

I'd be leary of going no-thumb just for one house, the main reason being I would fear creating bad habits in my armswing.  Also, having a no-thumber on my team, I have noticed he is awesome when the outsides are bone dry - (averages 200+ right now for the league).  Put a little oil out there and he's all over the place and struggling to shoot 490's.  Personally, I'd try equipment changes and see if you can find something that will work - might help if you ever get a late shift at a tourney some day too... Good Luck!

Yeah whats wrong with NOTHUMB???

Honestly though, I would say stay with your A game and work thru it. I know its not fun but as a NOTHUMBer I have the same experiences from other directions. Today I bowled a tournament where I had to go through 4 different balls, 3 releases, and anywhere from 12 board to 24 just to find something that wouldnt leave the weakest 10 pins youve ever seen. I ended up settling on a ball that would end up being a strike or a 2 pin everytime. Feet fast---2 pin. Feet slow---strike. 1 board to hit to strike---ahh the joy of the overwall. God I hate it.
