Appearance of current balls...
« on: January 24, 2018, 11:35:18 PM »
I realize there are about 2,316 more important things to gripe about, but I can't get over how many current balls are just plain ugly. To me, balls look the best when they're one color or two colors, max. It seems some companies want to see just how big a mess they can make. You have balls with red, green, black and purple all in the same ball. It looks like someone puked a bag of Skittles up. Also, news flash to the kid in the resin department -- when you mix red and green pigment together, you get brown. Stop thinking you can effectively mix red and green together and not have it coming out looking like cow chips.

It takes a deft touch to use two high-contrast colors effectively. I remember a ball Roto Grip did that was called (I think) the Winning Streak; it was an overseas Silver Streak I think. The ball was ice blue and bright red. It looked like an ICEE cup rolling down the lane, very pretty. Now when I see blue and red together on a ball it inevitably starts to look like a glass of red wine gone vinegar.

I love multi-colored balls just because they allow me to see my rotation more clearly. This in turn allows me to make adjustments more quickly, and more easily!

With a solid colored ball, if it's not dull, I am just guessing I released it correctly!

I am learning to watch my ball skid, hook, roll much more closely.

A multi-color ball pattern helps see this much better than a solid.

I like a solid color because fewer bowlers can tell when I miss the release.

There has only been a couple of balls through the years I wouldn't buy on appearance.

The Yellow angle.
The Bone XS.

There may have been a few others but those 2 stand out. Funny they were both AMF balls.

I do seem to recall a god awful yellow sun Storm (yellow cover, red print) when the brand started to pick up gear back in 1992/1993. The other ball they had (red cover, yellow print) was okay... But again, that was back in the Turbo/X and Xcalibur days, where violet and purple were in.

And I personally love the look of the Timeless SE and wish they would release here in the US. The World Cell looks incredible too

For what its worth, I use neon yellow inserts and thumb slugs on all my stuff.  Makes it easier to see the rotation no matter what color the ball is.
In the bag:  900 Global Zen, Hy Road Pearl, Astro Physix.

I usually like multiple colors on a ball but if it's too bright then everyone, including (and especially) me, can tell when I miss it at the bottom, grab it, top it, fluff it, etc. A good example is with my Candy Corn Boost.
But I also like solid color dark balls provided the pin is also dark. I can tell by sound and generally by results if it's picking up in the right spot, so I don't need to see the pin (more on that below).
There are really only two kinds of color problems for my tastes:
1) Really bright single colored balls (e.g. Forza Redline, Beyond Ridiculous, Venom Panic, all gold balls). Blech.
2) Dark colored balls with a white pin. I notice that lots of balls poured in Hopkinsville are dark but with white or yellow pins and no logos to the right, so in essence all that I see rotating on the ball is the pin. I HATE THAT. Examples are my Encounter, 920A and 920T, Salute, etc.
