« on: June 14, 2008, 05:14:38 PM »
hello, im a pretty decent lefty bowler who has fallen into a slump...lately my timing has gotten really late, my swing has become very muscled, and i have seemed to lost the ability to stay behind the ball...anyone have any tips over how to get over these things. im a avid tournament bowler and have won many tournaments so i have the expeirence, i would just like to hear how other bowlers have solved these problems

left-handers aren't wanted on this site...

lol no I'm playing.  Just need to get back to the basics and you'll be fine I'm sure.

go back to what you know.  I recently had some issues with throwing.  I went up to practice and as i set up for a shot, i would do it slow mo and make sure everything was right.  ends up i wasnt putting my thumb all the way in and was squeezing and forcing things.  you know how things should feel.  if not, get a friend who knows you to watch.  they should be able to see.

heres what i do... (im no expert but it works most of the time)

I break my approach down.

another words, if my timing is off ill purposely slow my arm down and pretend my muscles are like jello (or something weightless). then ill throw the ball like a sissy with what ever revs comes off my hand.

then the next shot ill add speed (with steps) or ball height until things start to line up.

sooner or latter things will click and youll say "oh man!, how did I not realize i was muscling the ball... or swinging around my back, etc"

OR

I simply go to practice and video tape myself. but this doesnt help if your muscling as the video doesnt always tell you what you're feeling.

other then that I dont know. like I said im no expert but I guess if its really bad the next step would be a coach. ive never gone that route as im not a tournament bowler but maybe it would be worth it if you're trying to make some cash?

Free up the arm swing. The muscling of the arm swing might be part of the cause of the late timing.

Another idea: Have you tried snugging up the thumb hole with some tape? If you can relax some grip pressure then it's easier to stay behind the ball a little longer and release the thumb faster. Guys who have a strangle-hold on the ball tend to muscle the arm swing, leave the thumb "in" too long, and spin the ball more.

What are your thumb pitches?

What I've found when an established bowler "loses" their timing, its nearly always something to do with their first step.  Either its too large, or too fast or something.  So I would suggest that you analyze your first step closely before delving into breaking apart your entire game.
