Just Won Big Money For League!!!
« on: April 25, 2007, 10:36:51 AM »
I just got back from the year banquet and won $147.00!!! I know this might not seem much to you all, but I was just surprised.  I was expecting a trophy or something.  Anyone else win money for their leagues?

I am going to the Poconos too for the PA State Championships.  The prize fund there is $250,000!  I hope I win some of that too.  Bowling rules!!!

Reverse block again!!??? NOOOOOOO!!!  I had to deal with that in Greensburg Tournament.  Well I am rolling up the 2nd arrow with the Fury or EPX.  One of them is going to hook out into the pocket.  I don't care how slow I gotta bowl.

We finished last night. My team took second place and I brought home almost $800.  The top four teams had a roll-off for the championship in which we tied for first, but took second due to the tie breaker process.  Now to get ready for the summer league...

We took home first place in our league.  16 team league and took home a nice 121 dollars.  What a joke.  New league next year.

I am going this weekend.  I have bowled in several houses on the west side of PA.  This will be my first time on the east side.  Hopefully I can break 200.

Took home just over $170 for 2nd overall (including high average, high scratch series), but realized I paid out $476. 300 dollars to have a good time is well worth it for a 34 week hobby I suppose.

I keep hearing about these big money leagues. What do they do different that gets the bigger payouts? More teams, more money to the top? 1st place got $660 for team to our $640 for 2nd place. I figured the gap would get bigger the higher up the places got, but it didn't scale that much.

A few ways.  First, they may not pay out all places.  I've tried to do that here, no one is interested, even though it means more money for the higher-placed teams.

Second, weekly dues are usually a lot higher for big-money leagues.  Our weekly dues for a 5-man handicap league are $14/week (previous threads on weekly dues tell me that's pretty typical).  About $9 for lineage, another $0.50 or so for BVL and secretary fees, leaves $4.50 a week per person for the prize fund.  Big-money leagues will be $20+ per person per week, giving well over twice as much for the prize fund.

Third, they'll often have sponsors.  There are a lot of "Bud Light Friday Night Scratch" or "Tuesday Night Miller Mens", "Coca-cola Monday Nights" and such.  Companies will kick in a couple of grand to the prize fund.  Some require sponsorships for the teams, basically an entry fee for each team into the league.  $200 per team at the beginning of the year means several thousand dollars in the prize fund before the first ball is thrown.  Teams will usually have uniforms with their sponsors' name on them to give advertising.  Sometimes the sponsor will pay a portion of the lineage as well.

Our prize fund (for that $14/week league) was about $12K.  With sponsors and entry fees, that could easily be $20K.  Bump $14/week to $20/week and we'd be putting more than twice as much into the prize fund even without sponsors.  You could have $30K in your prize fund.  Pay out half the teams and you're looking at probably $1-1.5K per man for first place instead of $200 per man for first place.  30 weeks at $20/week is only $600 for the year, so you can make money in leagues like that.

I won 1020.00 a man a few years ago when i bowled in a scratch league, after sweeper's were over i had about 1250.00 or so. Another handicap league i won 650.00 roughly on a sweeper night alone, i shot about 150 over that night.

This year i won jack crap and wasted 40.00 so far one more league to go next wednesday night, i am in about 40.00 in doubles. I will need at least 720 to win though and probably will not do it but who knows sometimes i shoot out my behind a game or two.

i'll post a breakdown of our linage and prize fund later, but my thursday nite men's league is great. we pay $17 a week. there are 32 teams this year and a waiting list for next year! we bowl 36 weeks, the last two weeks the center doesn't charge us linage so the whole 17.00 a man for two weeks goes directly towards the prize fund. we also pay a $50.00 per team sponser fee. 1st place is 1000 a man. fifth place gets 500 a man. i'll get you guys a better breakdown tonight, but this is the best money league in my area by far. it used to be better than that because of 50/50 drawings, but an idiot in out league got that stopped because he said it was gambling.

Our Friday night league pays $1000 a man to the 6th place team.  First gets $5500 a man, Second $3000, and Third $2000.  All spots are paid.  We do however, pay $27 a week, 5 man team, 36 weeks
