Just a thought...would you bowl it?
« on: November 22, 2010, 11:55:55 PM »
Weekly sport shot mini-tourney.  Different shot every week (if possible) 3 game qualifier, cut top half, pay the top half of the cut.  Can be scratch or hndcp (not sure yet) but likely scratch since this will be more of a niche group anyway.

Kind of like a league but no commitment, weekly payouts, singles, brackets, high pots, maybe even an eliminator.  Just trying to get more sport shot events in town and make it fun.  What you think?

I'd love to see weekly mini tournaments of any kind in my area.  So yea, I'd do it.  How often I'd participate would depend on the cost, as I am most likely not good enough to win on sport shots.

my area has a bi-weekly pba shot 3game sweeper, and its like it always gets the same 16 guys.... which is fine but, it would be nice if we could get 20 or so guys......

It got to the point were the guy running it switched it to 9pin no-tap, to try to get more guys showing up, but that didnt happen, same amount showed up...plus he changed it from top 16 single elim bracket, to top 5 stepladder....  So its not like that helps either.

but it also doesnt help that most of the "House shot" hero's complain when the shot is tougher or w/e....

Jdball, you could try doing a 50% or 80% handicap based on 220, from last years avg..  that way you could just look up thier avg in the association's avg book.

depending on how many entries you get you could just do a top 16 / 32 single elim bracket...

JDball,

but Ideally, a 4 or 5 game sweeper, if you have a time-slot that will allow it.... then cut to a top 16 or 32.. then doing a single elim bracket..

but yes i would still bowl in it.....  My thoughts are if you cut to top half of the entries or top 16 or 32, you'll get alot more people wanting to enter knowing they have a chance to make the cut, and in a single game elim bracket anything can happen.....

I see where you are coming from.  My main goal is to prevent this from becoming a half day event, more of something that can be done in a few hours or so.  3 games, take the top half of the field, bowl one more game, pay the top half of those that make the cut, ties broken by qualifier series.

It's a good theory on paper, and I have a few who have said that they would bowl it, but I need to try to get at least 30 or so on the wagon before I set a date and house and such.

We have a bi-monthly tournament series that is 6 games, and a monthly sport tournament series in the area, just looking to give alternatives to long afternoons on Sundays or bowlers who want more than a no tap on friday night or sunday afternoon.

It may not pan out....we'll see.

Personally, I'd prefer such events. (House) league is nice, but the weekly commitment in the evening hours is just not compatible with my working schedule. Having the opportunity to drop by is a more realistic approach, IMHO.

In my club we had a summer league which also followed an open format. You had to register, so your official average was recorded. On each playing day new trio teams were built: the player pool of the day was divided i9nto 3 divisions of good, mediocre and beginner players, and each trio would consist of one of those groups, so the filed was evened out. 4 games played in total, and a daily prize fund (based on the number of players) was given to the winning teams. At the season's and, a single player award was also given for highest average, best game, etc.

A very nice and flexible format - and it was also a good tool to get to know club members who play in different official league divisions.

We have a few in the area. On Wednesday nights there is a 5 game sweeper on PBA shots. Different center Sunday nights 3 game qualifier King of the Hill. Another center runs a King of the Hill series and other tournaments on Kegel,USBC ref/white/blue and a couple of his own design. Right now he's running a 9 pin no tap and what he calls the I pattern. Take a normal house shot and at 38 feet at a foot wide gutter to gutter " speed bump" which forms the top of the I. There are a couple more in the area but i don't remember their formats
