Release Issue
« on: October 15, 2009, 09:27:33 AM »
Finally have gotten back the feel of a loose arm swing. However, now I'm having an issue with all of my equipment rolling over the thumb hole. I don't mean slightly clipping it, they are rolling dead over the thumb. I don't know if by loosening my arm I've relaxed my hand/wrist too much. I don't have any videos unfortunately, just looking for some suggestions as to what it may be and what I can do about it. Thanks in advance.

Remember while a relaxed swing is optimal, you still want to lift at your ankle.  If you're completely relaxed all the way through, the ball is just rolling straight off your hand and you're coming directly up the back of the ball, which is my first guess as to why you're thumping.  Lift at the ankle and follow through.  If that doesn't seem to change anything, then I would take a closer look at your thumbhole and make sure you're getting your thumb out before your fingers, not at the same time.  Your arm is relaxed, but how tighlty are you holding or squeezing with the 3 fingers in the ball?

I have a pretty tight fit. Was hammered in when I was young to make sure the ball let's go of you not you let go of the ball. So it's pretty snug with little pressure if any. It just comes off the hand.

Rotate your wrist and hand counterclockwise (rightie) a little as you release the ball instead of coming straight up through it.  --  JohnP

I agree with JohnP..you still need to turn the ball at release even with the free arm swing.  Free arm swing just allows you to have a cleaner release.  I have been doing that for years and my release is as strong and clean as its ever been..with hardly any effort.

Just practice with it and you will figure it out.
