Need tips to help correct timing issue!
« on: July 31, 2012, 08:56:40 PM »
I have been in somewhat of a slump this summer.  While I normally average low to mid 600's I have been in the 560-580 range lately.  This is a result of lots of tugs, no matter what I tried, still tugging.  So tonight I am bowling against a very sound bowler and he immediately notices my problem.  My left foot (right hand bowler) and my release are arriving at the foul line at the exact same time, resulting in a hop as well and a tug inside of target! I am a 4 step approach bowler with shoulder high back swing.  What can be done to get my slide foot to the foul line first?

A hop at the foul line is usually a balance problem, caused by your weight being too far to one side of your body.  If you have too much weight on your right side at release you will hop a bit to the right to reposition your weight.

You may also be walking to the line too fast.  When you practice, try to post up your shots until you don't hop.

I have seen two people with this same problem.  All it took was adding a fifth step to their approach and their timing issues were fixed.  It might work for you.

It means:

A.) You feet are fast causing a lot of momentum to the line, hard to stop when you're faster to the line than you're body will allow.

B.) You're dropping the shoulder, trying place the ball on the lane rather than coming through with it. This causes you to be to far forward and you losing your balance.

C.) You're not posting shots, maybe the trail leg is not touching the lane and thereby not doing its job to keep you balance. Hard to throw an object while balancing on 1 leg.

All this, with no vid to visual aid to coach is the best i can do.

I think you get what you pay for with advice and tips on this website.  I would seek out a qualified coach and not just one of the good bowlers in league or the abundant number of experts who visit this site.

I am having the exact same problem!  Started off the league doing great, and now I can't break 200 to save my life.  Off balance, doing stupid crap with my hand on the back swing, trail leg not where it should be...and tug almost every shot.  I just can't put it all together.  It's not a lack of practice either. I think I need to take an extended break after this season is over.  :-[

I am hopefully going to try to video soon.  Thanks for all the advice.  I am going to practice some of these tips.  I think 5th step may help and posting the shot may help.  Seems that maybe I am trying to place the ball and concentrating to much on not tugging causing me to lose my timing.  Would moving up or back on the approach help?

With a video and somebody who understands the game, paying for coaching when readily somewhat relative, constructive criticism that is free - I'd choose to seek all options and have a number of opinions rather than "sticking to what one person says," like Urethane Game speaks of.

A good video and someone that knows how to read it makes a big difference.  There is nothing like stop action and slow motion.

900,

Take a vid of yourself and watch it yourself. Notice what you do on balls that strike and balls that dont. The old saying, "you are your own critic" comes to mind. I've been doing it all summer and have noticed some glaring issues in my game and have worked to correct them. Cant hurt and atleast you would have a reference to give to a coach if you feel it necessary. Coaches are a very helpful aspect and its important to understand that some fixes are not rewarded immediately. I sucked for most of the summer (in league) but had a very decent tournament schedule. Im also lucky enough to be under one of the best coaches in my area and have Mo Pinel frequent the shop. DOUBLE GOODIE for me!!! While i do agree with Urethane Game for the most part, there's nothing wrong with free advise.

Thanks guys,  going to practice tomorrow.  Hopefully, someone can go help video.  Going to work on some things mentioned.  Mostly shortening my third step, all my steps are the same.  Never knew the third step should be shorter until I started watching other 4 steppers.
