How to you attack long oil ?
« on: October 03, 2011, 06:40:50 AM »
What kind of player are you ?
What kind of balls do you use, surfaces, drillings ?

I was told to use 60 x 5.25ish x 30, with a ball that has less surface how do you think this would work
I have a 330 rev rate 16mph 5.25 x .5 up axis

something long with a flip works for me as long as you have friction on the end of the pattern.

This is from 2006 but is still the best fore reading about how to play long (and short) tournament patterns.

As they say, you want to keep the ball in the pocket, and elongate the breakpoint... so, sorry to disagree with the previous poster, but you don't want anything snappy!

Personally, I try to keep my break point closer to the pocket. This is so I am not asking the ball to cross as many boards as with a typical house shot. I will usually use more surface on the ball (maybe 1000 - 2000) to blend out the reaction, too.

If the volume is high enough, I love my NS² with a 4" label layout on long oil. It has a strong core and a grippy particle cover - together with the label layout it sums up to a very stable mid lane reaction and a smooth breakpoint, with little back end. I found this combo to be very effective, because it offers good control and avoids breakpoint hazards with balls that rather flip or go quickly from the skid to roll transition. The ball just needs long oil, and the heavier the volume the better.

On long but thin oil, my 1st choice is a weaker, solid ball with a lower differential and medium to low RG, which I can play down and in as long as the lane is fresh and which offers potential for more hook once a track builds up. My revolution Renegade has been a very good choice here, as well as my black Pure Hammer, and I think that my new Solaris Blackout is also a very good ball for such conditions, esp with its low RG/low Rg diff. combo and the mellow cover which even works well on thin oil and does not become jumpy once things start to dry up.

Ryan that article from Kegal was awesome and now i am understanding why the pros do what they do. I also know have a better understanding how to attack tournament patterns. I tried to take this approach at our state tournament and failed terribly. It was what i thought was a short oil  pattern so i tried to go more straight at it with a smoother reacting ball and it just didn't work. Then a friend told me that was a block pattern that was just burnt up. I was so confused until i read your posted URL. Thank you!

No problem Sheppy!  Kegel's articles on lane play are great, and afterall, they design a lot of the tournament patterns played world wide!
