Best ball manufacturer
« on: August 06, 2004, 07:23:20 AM »
I’m probably going to catch some flak but I thought I would post some observations.

During the past 5 years I’ve switched manufactures each year, just looking for that perfect ball line.

Ebonite
Storm
Track
Lane 1
Dynothane

After looking at my averages I saw a 6 pin difference between high and low average over that 5 year period.  Doesn’t appear to me that there really is that much difference between any of them.

This year I’m taking a different approach, I’ve got a mixture of Ebonite, Storm, Lane 1 & Dynothane.  Just trying to see if that makes an appreciable difference.

I have equipment from lots of manufacturers, but the main bag always seems to contain Brunswick, Lane #1, and Storm.

I never have understood the bowler who will use one company's equipment exclusively, then decide to throw it all away and go with another company. The only way I'd do that would be IF I were sponsored by one company. Otherwise, I want the best ball for the condition - and, as someone already said, that ball is the one that's getting the strikes.
(or in my case, the one that stayed at home. )

Angstfilled, you have a pretty good spread of Track products there. Most all the Brunswick balls you mentioned have a higher Rg than the Track balls. With that Track arsenal I can't believe you would not be happy. Look before you leap.

I only bowl with Ebonite but i will say i never ever have had the nuts to try something else. So i cannot formulate a true opinion and i will admit to it! I mean everything i have is Ebonite, except shoes which i have Dexter's and i am looking at some ABS's to replace them. I look at other equipment and think it is nice and hear lots of good things but i don't know how it will work for me cause i am set in my ways. I am the same in golf, Taylor Made driver, 3 wood, Irons, Cleveland Wedges and same putter for the last 13 years.

The best lesson I ever heard was from a PBA'er who never made it. He cashed at a few stops but returned to a real job. He said to pay more attention to core shapes and surface.(both coverstock type and grit levels)As far as the best manufacturer. It would be the one with great customer service and best lead times. Lower price point and product durability never hurts either. If you match up with a ball it doesn't matter whose name is on it.

On the PBA website, they played an interview with Del Ballard.  He said that, for the most part, a bowling ball is a bowling ball.  That said, he noted that occasionally a person will find a coverstock or core that works especially well for him or her -- that matches up to the game -- and that can make a small but appreciable difference at the higher levels of the game where "reaction" is key.  I'm not certain I agree with the first part of what he said, because I believe that there are balls that are more or less forgiving (and less responsive to what the bowler wants), but overall, the statement seems sound.

I have thrown Ebonite, Storm, Roto-Grip, and Brunswick.  And the company that I think is best is Roto-Grip.  Why?  The answer is simple.  I love how Roto Grip balls hit, there is something about them that just push the pins back.  Secondly, cost.  For a small company, hell even if the were a big company, the prices are GREAT and you best believe that if they come out with a $200 ball its worth every penny.  Thirdly, their selection, Roto gets a ball that works they stick with it.  Case in point, the Silver Streak is almost 2 years old but its performance is still up there/above every other ball company's mid-price ball. There's none of this 4 balls every 2 months stuff.  Some might say that the other company's are staying more up to date.  And at that I laugh, Bowling is not like the technology field, the conditions aren't changing that fast.  Seems to me like every company's new technology is HOOK! HOOK! HOOK!  Which doesn't equate to a good ball. Just my opinon.
