Kids bowling balls
« on: November 29, 2005, 01:42:48 AM »
my 2 oldest kids started bowling this year in league (ages 9 and soon to be 8). We bought them shoes right away caue lets face it, $2.50 for rental over 29 weeks is $72 each, compared to $25 for the shoes for each, money savings. The problem is they have been using house balls, granted they are young but they both love to bowl, every chance we get we go. They do pretty well, both average in the 60-70 range. I was wondering if it would be worth buying them their own ball. They both throw 6lbs balls and wondering if 7lbs would be to heavy just to leave room for growth for next year or should I just get them 6lbs now and buy new balls every year. My 4 year old is starting next year and he'll get his own as well.

It would depend on how much they weigh, how athletic they are and if they are in good health.  If everything is good then you might look at 8lb. white dots or something like that.  If they grow quickly maybe even 10lbs. in some cases. If you have the pro shop drill them they will fit better and they will be able to support the greater weight.  Stay with conventional drillings.

I have seen many parents by their kids a 6 lb ball and they kid uses it for a year or two. As far as getting a 6lb or 8 lb ball that is hard for any of us to answer. It all depends on your kids. Some kids can handle and 8lb while others need to stay at 6lbs. The question is have you had them try both the 6 and 8lb balls? What one are they comfortable with? I would have them try both out if you have not done that yet. But yes getting a ball makes the child feel better just like when we get a new one.

I was thinking along the same lines of going up in weight. The have been bowling since september, every saturday morning at 8:00 a.m.  My daughter has a real slow approach and almost just sets the ball down, she's 9. My oldest boy (8 on January 1st) runs up and whips the ball down. I thought a heavier ball for him would make him slow down.

I will have the local pro shop owner watch the kids and make a recommendation. Thanks for your advice everyone.

As Scotty said, having the ball fit for them can make the difference between 6# and 8# seem minor.  If that doesn't work, you could try passing the 6# down to your 4-year-old later by having it plugged.  That might save you some money.

But a 9-year-old should be able to handle an 8# ball, especially if it's a conventional grip.

Sig-

I have a 4 year old that has an 8 lb ball and he can handle it just fine.  Granted, he really doesn't have much of an arm swing.  But I would think an 8 year old would be able to handle it with no problem.

Have fun bowling with your kids...I know I do.  It's the one time I really don't care what my score is.  That is, until he starts beating me
