Yep, position rounds make for an interesting shootout, especially if they are the end of the half and there is less than 4 points between the first and second place teams. This format assures that the second place team has a shot at the first place team right before the half ends or whatever. Sometimes additional position rounds are worked into the schedule as well...I bowl on one league that bowls 34 weeks, and position rounds are week 5, 12, and 17 of each half of the schedule (bowling 2 halves).
Also, if additional teams such as the third or fourth place teams are within 2 points of the first place team, even a fourth place team could jump up and win the half in a position round....of course, this all depends on how the points shake out during the position round night. I have seen situations where the first and second place teams split, and the fourth place team won all 4 points, and the fourth place team jumped all the way into first place (like the example I used). Without a position round, it is unlikely that such a schedule would fall into place on the critical night at the end of the half.
