Best ball for toast? (Besides Plastic)
« on: May 06, 2005, 02:22:59 PM »
Need to pick up a ball for the toasty conditions along with something else for my B-day to help round out my arsenal. Right now my dry lane ball is a hex drilled label which can be too much for dryish conditions, but my only step down is plastic, and I lose a lot of carry(stupid white dot ) I was thinking maybe a trooper, or a crisis pearl. Maybe a barrage if I could find one. I've heard even the PG dry/R is great for the toasty stuff. Any recommendations for a good ball to fit under my Hex?

Alright thanks bunches everyone, pretty much made up my mind that I want the slate blue gargoyle, always wanted to try visionary. Just a question for those who have actually thrown it...do you get enough length out of it? That seems to be the thing that worries me most.

whatever you get, drill it to flare as little as possible,..the more the flare the more the hook..balls with a lot of top weight work well for me too,..balls that start with 4 to 5 ounces of top are out there,...after drilling if you can get one down to about 2 1/2 oz of top, the ball will get down the lane easier...

Someone suggested the slay/r. I have that ball as well. I can tell you from personal experience that it is too much ball on truly DRY conditions.

Very true. I bought this ball expecting it to be for dry conditions, but it's really not. I LOVE my SlayR on medium/light shots though.

Formerly Columbia4Life aka T4L

Have used it for anywhere from light oil to medium-heavy (down the 10 board, literally). It's great, in the mode of the Pro Purple was, with the drilling I have, 5x5, pin & CG stacked in the grip. Carry is not great; but it hits the pocket always.

I put the pin over the ring finger, about 1/5", CG stacked below. Makes a great spare ball on normal patterns, and a very good strike ball on dry-ish lanes. Needs a high pin to get length, due to strong RG.

I know you said no plastic but I have to mention it anyway.
Roto Grip Spare Tire
I have had one for a few weeks now and this thing really hits on toast.
The first night I used it for a strike ball at one point I left 3 solid 9s in a row, I have never seen another spare ball have even close to the drive through the pins that it has. It is also the first spare ball that I have ever used that actually has a reaction instead of just a smooth arc.

Find a Stinger Low Flare Pearl. The Slate is good if you want urethane but the Dry/R is too much ball for true dry conditions (unless you have minimal hand).

Keep looking... I'm sure there's a 300 in one of those balls you keep buying!!

Good Lord, are you suggesting a fairly strong reactive ball with an asymmetric core and a large differential for TOAST????  What do you use for mediums, a sandblasted Super Carbide Bomb?

Hex, I think you're heading in the right direction.  The Slate Blue Gargoyle should be a good choice.  A length drilling will help it get downlane similar to a weaker reactive.

Blue Sparkle Gryphon or the Slate Blue Gargoyle from Visionary. As far as Visionary products go, in my personal opinion they are one of the best, they have good length, great hitting power, they last a long time and they are more affordable than most of the high end companies. I personal have a Orange Warlock and a Pink Tour Edition Warlock, wish I could find a couple more of those, and the Midnight Scorcher is the most hooking ball I have ever seen. The Blue Sparkle Gryphon can be found on Ebay for $55.00 Item number: 7156122470. The Slate Blue Gargoyle would be better for the dry conditions and the Blue Sparkle Gryphon for a medium to light condition.
