Knee pain
« on: June 04, 2008, 06:55:01 AM »
I was a few days from joining a summer Sport/PBA league when my knee began acting up pretty bad.  It has for the past few years. It always gave me a little bit of trouble every now and again.  But this last time was really bad.
I went to an Orthopedic Dr, he did x-rays but it didn't really show anything. I had orthoscopic surgery on my knees about 20+ years ago, they removed some of the meniscus and so this could be part of the issue.  Suggestion from Dr was cortisone shots. They will help with the pain for a few days but not really a fix.  The other was an MRI to see if there is anything the x-ray did not show.  But from the sounds of the Dr.  It looks like there will be nothing he can do.

Now for the bowling question.  For those with knee pain on the slide leg, what do you do to help you out?  Take pain pills before bowling?  Does a knee brace help? If so, what kind is the best to get? What other things can I do to help reduce the pain?
Thanks

EDIT: I have and use the dexter shoes with interchangable soles and heels

Is your pain occurring on the inside of the slide knee, or outside of the knee?

Have you had a short leg test?

http://www.betterbodz.com/team/shortleg.html

If your non-slide leg measures short, you will have slide leg knee, ankle pain.

Inversion Table work helps. Takes the pressure ff of your hips, knees, etc.

It can be due to age, weight, etc.

You can PM me with any questions...

what kind of shoes do yo own?If you have a lower end pair (think dexter ricky for an example) that comes with a permanent attached heel and sole, you can upgrade to either a dexter sst 5 and up or 3G (dynothane/abs) shoe that will allow you to adjust the sole/heel combo to give you a more smooth slide..  This will prolly take care of the knee problem.

Pain is occurring on the inside of my slide knee.  I have put on 20lbs over the past year and a half.  I'm probably 40lb over weight.  I don't think I've had a short leg test done but I will keep that in mind when I go to my Chiro or if I go see the Orthopedic Dr. soon.  Reading some of the symptoms, I have the sciatic neuralgia (inflammation of the sciatic nerve that produces pain in the buttocks and down the back of the leg.) Even when I weighed 20-40lbs lighter I have almost always had the sciatic neuralgia.

Thanks for the info Duke!  I really don't want to give up bowling but with the way my knee has been feeling, I thought I might have to.

For those of you bowling with knee pain, what other things do you do to help you out?

MVAS800, I HAVE THE SAME ISSUE YOU ARE CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING. I TAKE TWO ALEVE (AN ANTI-INFLAMMATORY MEDICINE) AND I ALSO HAVE BEEN USING A NEOPRENE KNEE WRAP. NOW, I HAD A HERNIATED DISC IN MY LOWER BACK ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO IN EIGTH GRADE. I HAD THAT PROBLEM SURGICALLY REMOVED. NOW, ABOUT A YEAR AGO I HAD SOME OF THE COMMON SYPTOMS OF sciatic neuralgia. I WENT TO THE DOCTORS AND HE GAVE ME SOME GREAT PAIN RELIVERS AND MUSCLE RELAXERS. I OBVIOUSLY COULDNT BOWL WHILE I WAS ON THE MUSCLE RELAXERS. THE DOC ALSO GAVE ME AN EXERCISE SHEET AND SOME REALLY GREAT STRECTHES TO DO. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO DO IF YOU WANT TO CONTINUE TO BOWL IS STRETCH. ALWAYS STRETCH. TAKE TWO ALEVE IN THE MORNING, GET YOURSELF A NEOPRENE KNEE WRAP AND STETCH. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS JUST ASK.    BY THE WAY.......STAY AWAY FORM THE CHIROPRACTOR AS THIS COULD CAUSE SOME UNWANTED NERVE DAMAGE!

Hi mvas800, I've had this problem the last couple of years except my pain was more on the outside of the slide knee.  Here are some tips for you...

Advil or Aleve - I used to take 2 or 3 advil each night before bowling.  Probably not the healthiest thing to do (especially if consuming alcohol), but it definitely keeps the pain down enough to bowl comfortably.

Knee support - instead of a full knee wrap or brace, this knee support wraps just below your knee cap and puts slight pressure on the tendon there.  This takes a bit of pressure off of the inside & outside of your knee and relieves the pain.  I used this for a full season and it does work.  Sometimes if you wear it too tight, however, you may feel sore the next day.  You can get one of these http://www.bowling.com/products/robbys-kneed-it-knee-support.htm or spend less $$ and find one from any drug store like http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/cvs/gateway/detail?prodid=144054&deptid=1&catid=3518&subcatid=3526&previousURI=/CVSApp/cvs/gateway/shelf?deptid=1^catid=3518^subcatid=3526 this.

Change your slide pad - after using advil and the knee support for a while, I decided I needed new shoes (8 yr old Dexters w/ out removable soles).  My new SST 7's felt so slippery when I first started wearing them, but I got used to it.  Another surprise was that I noticed my knee pain was almost totally gone!  So if you haven't changed your slide sole (or even your heel), I would suggest switching to a new one or the slickest one you can comfortably bowl on.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info.  I plan to go practice this weekend.  Gonna get a knee brace and I will see how I do with it.

I've had knee pain on and off for a lot of years now. I messed up my knee multiple times running track in high school years ago. It was never serious enough to have surgery and like you X-rays, etc. showed nothing.

I have prescription strength naproxen and this helps reduce the pain and swelling and is a good temporary fix.

What I've found that works best is weight lifting to build the muscles up around the knee. Leg extensions are probably the best but I also do leg presses and leg curls to build up all the muscles in my legs.

If I was more dedicated to my physical fitness I'd go to the gym every week and keep this up. The reality is I'll join for a year and go 1-2 times a week for 6-12 months and then take a couple years off until my knee really bothers me again. At that point I'll join a gym again for a year, lift weights, knee feels great, stop going to the gym, rinse, repeat.
