Man does that terminology take me back to 1990! Then it was used to describe any drilling with a large enough label shift to require an extra hole. Back then these sort of drilling were used mainly to create 'strong' ball reactions. These days  when you shift the label a long way from the centre of your grip it's usually to put a more controllable layout on a ball. You could also use it to describe any extreme amount of pitch on the finger/thumb holes to help encourage/create a specific release motion too.

I think the GIMMICK part of your question hits it on the HEAD! Now bowlers are going to come back and talk about PITCHES and special features that they require for drilling .. but the truth of the matter is that once you say FINGER TIP the PRO SHOP will say EXOTIC!
