Knee Pain Issue!
« on: September 14, 2008, 03:14:14 PM »
Ok Ive had pain in my knee for the last few months. Its to the point now where I cant bowl unless I take pain pills like Aleve or something, and Im still feeling a lot of pain during the first 2 games. The meds dont begin working until the 3rd game anyway. I was advised to 1) get a brace, and 2) go get it checked out which I will definately do as soon as I can. I dont have insurance right now because Im out of work and dont want to pay a ton of money to get it worked on.

What kind of brace would you suggest works best? The pain clearly comes from when I post up at the line and put weight on my knee as I go into the knee bend. Im big on form and technique and have learned to post up and get a good knee bend on every shot but its painful to do so now and its hurt my game by at least 15 pins/game.  I know that the pain stems from me being overweight so I know the cause, but the remedy is what Im looking for. I will definately get my knee looked at within the next few weeks (should be getting a new job) but I need some info on a good knee brace and the best pain relievers besides vics (not into the heavy drugs like that) or if anyone has the same type of issue.

Thanks!

Here's my personal experience from this summer...

Began the summer averaging 225 for the first few weeks.  I started running again this summer and experienced some mild knee pain which started to affect my bowling scores.  My average dropped about 15-20 pins the second half of the summer.

I was first recommended to try one of the magnetic knee braces that fits just under your knee.  I know a lot of people swear by them, but all I can say is that the product was crap for me and actually made the pain worse.

The next recommendation I got was to try fish oil supplements.  I had read about them before in a magazine which explained how good they are supposed to be for arthritis.  All I can say is WOW, for less than $10 a bottle ($20 a year) at wal-mart the pain was 75% gone in 48 hours and now is 90% gone after about 2-3 weeks of use.

I'm now back up to averaging 225 with no problems as I can actually post shots again.  I'm no doctor, but for $10 it can't hurt to try.

I damaged the lining of my knee a few years ago, and it slowly deteriorated getting more and more painful until eventually I couldn't bowl (and in fact had trouble walking on it)

The only advice I can suggest is to stop bowling. Now. Use the money you save to get yourself a consultation. These things almost never get better, especially if you keep doing something which you know is going to cause you significant pain. Unless you're a professional, in the literal sense of the word, I would also advise against bowling with painkillers. Whilst NSAIDs have a beneficial effect in reducing swelling as well as reducing pain, the reason the swelling is there is because you've damaged something and the swelling is there to protect it. If you use painkillers to circumvent the pain, your injury could take longer to recover when you do get some proper treatment.
Also, try and go to the gym a little, and build up the muscles around the knee joint it will increase stability and shorten recovery if you need an op (obviously limit this to what you can do comfortably).

I tend to have some pain in the knee also.

I plant, generally don't slide, try to if I can so that's a factor causing distress.

One thing that has helped me now that I am bowling three leagues a week is stretching everday once or twice a day.  Even a few times before and while bowling.

I make sure that my hamstrings, calves, and the knee area are/is always loose.

I also take a few advils as a precaution one hour before bowling to allow disgestion and absorption into the blood.  Generally it takes about 45 minutes to absorb.

I also try to sit down as much as possible between frames.

I have not needed a knee brace and I am bowling more now than ever before.

You have to do everything people have suggested.  My knee pain worsened since I have added 20lbs to my frame.  I know it's due to added weight, lack of activity, not stretching.
I started walking for 30 minutes on the treadmill, did 15-20 squats(later added a little weight), I bought one of those braces that goes just below the knee and it helped me(I lost it already though). Even without the brace, my knee quite hurting when I was exercising and stretching.  I have stopped exercising and my knee pain is back.  So, do I buy a brace? Or shall I get off my lazy but and start exercising again?  Guess I will do both.

Self Myofascial Release will alleviate the illiotibial band from snapping across the greater trochanter of the distal head of the femur.

That should help most of the knee pain.    If the cartilage from w/in the knee capsule has degenerated or arthritis has kicked in the chondroitan would be a better answer

When I had my knee problems I bought a neoprene (not for sure of spelling) brace. Loaded up on pain pills about an hour or two prior to league. I also tried to keep my trailing leg more behind me as well. I would whip it around and put a lot more tension on my sliding knee by twisting my body. Once I did all of those especially keeping my trail leg a little more behind me my knee pain went way down.

Where is the pain?  On the top of the knee, under the cap, in the front, on the sides?  Knee braces work, but you have to get the right type for your particular injury.  I'll tell you from experience though that nothing beats strengthening and or repairing the area of the knee that is damaged.  I went from having to pop pills after 3 games of bowling to being able to bowl 8-10 games at a time without much pain by just running every other day.

I have this too, first year of bowling.. I need to find a way to change my form so that I don't cause long term issues. But I've changed shoes and that helped the pain alot. I use to have entry level Brunswick shoes now I have etonic stabilites with changeable soles (best bowling investment I've made). Now I can slide and when I'm slipping I can just change pads.

I have had 2 knee surguries from both injuries from bowling.  First time i stuck and fell directly on the knee sheering off cartlidge behind the knee.  Second time just wear and tear had to get the knee cap moved back in place about an inch.  Since the 2nd surgury 2 years ago I have use a Berg Brace with side stabalizers on my knee.  it is not neoprene and there fore does not get sweaty.  Like most of you I had gone many years of the aleve route before bowling with ice and heat after and could not bowl more than 3 games then having to stop.  I can now bowl as many as 15 games in a row without any problems.

In my case, being flat footed, I simply get some soles with better arch supports.  Since that time ALL my knee pain has stopped!  I used the walk-fit knock off for half the price.  Not to mention my balance has improved!!
