Knee problems

In December 2005, I was in an accident that resulted in shattering my left tibia and breaking my left kneecap. In the two seasons since I have come back from those injuries, I have struggled mightily, in large part due to trying to garner some consistency in my knee bend. Prior to the accident, I bowled with a pretty deep knee bend. Now, I can't seem to consistently put all my weight on my knee in that deep a bend, and I haven't figured out how to adjust to not bending as deep (or at all), to the point that from game to game (or, more often, shot to shot) my posture and position vary greatly. At the end of last season, my leg was tired enough (and I was discouraged enough) that I put my balls away, and haven't touch them since. Instead, I have focused more on strengthening and conditioning in hopes of getting the leg strong enough to bear the load of me bowling another season. Now that the new season is rapidly approaching, I'm going to spend some time out on the lanes to get ready. My question is (supposing I still can't consistently bowl with a significant knee bend)for the guys who have battled knee issues, what kind of adjustments did you make, physically and mentally, and have they worked for you?

I suffer from knee aches from torn cartiledge and being overweight. The magnetic kneed (black/gold) it from robby worked great for me. $40 bucks but well worth the investment.

I have strugggled with my knee this season, especially the last few months.  It has been to the point I have had to not bowl several league sessions. I also couldn't bowl like I usually do in North Carolina . While at The Gathering, some one suggested staying more upright.  

I tried it this week, in league Tuesday, Wenesday & Thursday.  I had to start more upright and slow my approach down which caused some timing issues, especially Tuesday.  A completely different feel and forced me to be more accurate to score, there is less room for error.  BUT the knee held for all three league sessions.

Go to an Orthopedic, get it checked out, and get a prescription knee brace, it will be much thinner than the ones at the stores that will give you the same amount of support. I have some bad knees and I had to get one because of how much my knee hurts at times, I know exactly what you mean. I've had a couple surgeries on my sliding knee too, recovering right now from one, I'm back to bowling, just need to rehab the knee some though, lost a bit of muscle mass, but I'm using a prescription knee brace while bowling and it feels great.

I agree with the knee brace.  If you don't want to get a prescription brace, even a cheap one from Walmart will at least help.

The other thing I see with people rehab'ing their knee is they tend to forget about the posterior part of the knee and leg.  Make sure you are doing exercises (leg curls is one of the best) to strengthen the hamstrings and rear ligaments.  They take more of your weight than most think and they are often overlooked when working back from a knee injury.
