Title: Knee problems
Post by: dirtbikebowler on July 06, 2004, 09:42:42 AM
I am just wondering for those of you have/had knee problems what you do to help it? I'm only 15 and my left knee(sliding knee) hurts alot when i bowl. Both of them hurt when i'm doing other sports.

Is there any braces or something to help the pain?

Thanks.

I think the FIRST thing to do is SEE a DOCTOR!  Let him/her DETERMINE what the PROBLEM is.  Then, you will KNOW how to take CARE of it.

If it turns out to be JUST soreness in general with NO physical source, get a GOOD pair of shoes that will ALLOW you to SLIDE.  Planting or not sliding ENOUGH could cause UNDUE stress on the knee.

Did you SUFFER any dirt bike INJURIES to your knees?

I am 15 also and my sliding knee hurts when I bowl. I must be similar to dirtbikebowler b/c they both do sometimes hurt during other sports. I would like to get rid of the pain though b/c its hard to bowl with my knee hurting. Any Docs here got any ideas?

Take this from someone that has gone through NUMEROUS knee problems. See a physician!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is no way that anyone can accurately diagnose your problem over the internet.

What I thought might just be an old aggravated injury, turned into being torn menescus.

My knee problems started in my teens.....via hockey (I played Jr B and Jr A in Canada, then officiated semi-pro in my early 20's). Maybe if medicine and technology was as good 25-35 years ago as it is today then I wouldn't have as many problems.

I know half a dozen people with the same issue. Basically your approach/plant is incorrect...usually only takes 1 or 2 bad ones to feel the pain.

One other thing to look at is.  You are only 15 you are still growing.  Growing pains are very very real.  There is no way around that, but as somebody with 7 knee surgery's under my belt I can tell you one thing for sure.  Stay on top of it.  If there really is something wrong it will not get better with time or age.

Take the advice from everyone here and see a doctor.

I am a chiropractor and I suggest that you see either a chiroprator who specializes in sports injuries like myself or to see an orthopedist or a physiatrist.

You want a specialist looking at that knee.  Your knees are the only ones you have and if you are only 15 then you need to make them last.  Especially if you are having problems now.

1. SEE A DOCTOR, NOW!

2. Could be any of a number of things going on, most of which I (not having the expertise) won't go into; however, your end of the approach could be at fault (i.e., do you plant and heave? or slide?)

3.  For short term help there are a number of braces you might look at: I use (at times) a blue neoprene brace with neoprene support ribs on it.  Helps a lot.  I'd also suggest glucosamine chondroitin (if that's the exact name I'd be surprised, but it's very like that).  When I remember to take it daily it helps (over time).

4.  SEE A DOCTOR, NOW!

Like everyone else says see a Doctor.  Also check your shoes. If you have the cheaper flat bottom shoes invest in some good shoes with a real heal.  You may be dragging your slide foot.
