Is there really such a thing as "Hits Hard?
« on: September 18, 2003, 05:18:11 AM »
We hear the words: "This ball hits hard" in reviews and in conversations with other bowlers. Or the opposite, "this ball hits like a marshmellow". The "hits hard" words may result from the ball making a louder (it seems) noise when it hits the pins. Or smashing all the pins deeply into the pit. The question is: Does one ball actually hit the pins harder than others? How can this be? Throwing the same speed, same revs on the same lane one after another, how can one ball "hit harder" than another? Or is it just a figment of our imagination? Or a perception based upon our failing eyesight and wishful thinking?

I'm NO EXPERT .. for sure! But I have opinions on EVERYTHING. I've used the expression HITS HARD .. I guess I can only compare to OTHER BALLS used. I think the HARDEST HITTING balls I have are 3 LANE 1 balls. I don't BUY the balls at the price they are .. BUT .. THEY DO HIT HARD. By that I mean .. NOT ONLY THE SOUND .. but the results .. pins going flying. Another ball I think HITS HARD is the MoRICH OnSLAUGHT .. there's a ball that HITS HARD!

HITTING LIKE A MARSHMALLOW is not one of my terms .. can't really give my two cents on it!

Deflection vs Drive  that is my take on it.

Deflection = marshmellow hits.

how the ball "hits" the 1-3-5-9 RH 1-2-5-8 LH
ie how much does it deflect off of those pins.

I never really put too much stock into "hitting hard" until I threw my old Reactive Flame. One night I was throwing my Qunatum in league and crushing, until the shot dried out and it started to go a little high. The last game I switched over to my brand-new Flame, only to leave the 5-7, two 8-10s, and two 5 pins. I went 230-230-170. That was with only missing pocket once the final game.

I think that "hitting hard" is usually referencing carry, which we all know is about 90% entry angle. So, I suppose it’s possible for a ball to “hit hard” on one shot and not the other. Still, I believe there are some balls that just are not ever going to carry or “hit” as well as others.

I've always thought of the term as how much energy is transferred by the ball to the pins or how much energy is left when the ball gets to the pocket.  If the ball rolls out and has no energy left when it gets to the pocket it would hit like a powderpuff.  If the ball gets to the pocket with maximum level of energy then it should hit hard.  This doesn't mean that it will hit right or even carry.  I've got a Trauma Unit that makes the big booming sounds but I leave a lot of 10's, 7's, stone 9's with it.

When I say "Hits Hard" I mean makes the rack explode, sends messengers rolling back and forth across the deck yet keeps the pins low enough to take out the 10 pin and of course the ball just plain carries.

Now that you know what I'm talking about when I say it, I'll get to the next part. Of course "hits hard" exists.

The ABC measures and limits "Coefficient of Restitution" doesn't it?
Old timers whine about the "carry" of today's bowling balls vs. the balls of yesteryear don't they?

Of course "matching up" the ball you are throwing and your ball speed to the lane condition matter a lot too.
