Definition of Gambling?
« on: September 19, 2003, 12:42:34 AM »
I was just informed that the "Bowling Center" says that ABC/WIBC considers the "50/50" pot we run on our Wednesday evening league cannot be done anymore. Said to be within the ABC/WIBC definition of Gambling. I just read the rules and do not see any such definition! Our "50/50" pot folks sold tickets for 50 cents, then drew a number. the winning number got 1/2 the money, the league prize fund got the other half. This is now gambling?

Rule 15 mentions gambling but only regarding the use of your bowling score to determine the winner.

Any thoughts or explanations?

I'm not sure I would trust the center unless they have the letter opinion from Bowling Headquarters.  I would hazard a guess that the house wants control over all issues involving money.  Most houses I have seen run mystery score type stuff and various forms of strike pots, which would seem much more of a score-based gamble than the 50-50 pots.

well in michigan about 3 or so years ago the liquor commision was cracking down

they said no gambling-at a plublic place that is selling beer/liquor

which meant games of luck-NO SKILL

so no card playing at the table, no 50-50, no mystery

but
you could run jackpots because it was based on skill

well the bowling proprietors had a congressman pass a law it was ok(or they may have just busted ther chops for a while and the said it was ok) im not sure-it was a while ago

so it lasted about a month os so-know back to normal

DICNIC .. read your PROFILE and laughed out loud .. ain't it the truth .. SENIORS never get oil .. it aint only in FL.

I don't see the CENTER getting involved in things that you mention .. leagues in NC where GAMBLING IS A CURSE WORD .. have 50/50/brackets and all kinds of pots .. if it were ILLEGAL .. NC would not do it .. based on that theory .. I'd say the CENTER is PULLING YOUR CHAIN! Now if you were a YABA league it would be DIFFERENT .. I don't think your in a YABA LEAGUE
