Hypothetical Question as I will never be on the "SHOW"
« on: June 21, 2003, 11:37:29 PM »
Here is a Hypothetical Question for all...

If you are bowling in the TV finals......are sponsored by a Ball Company...and they want you to throw certain equipment but may not be the ball to win the tourney with......do you stick with that or go to the ball the may win the event??

Reason I ask this....after watching the PWBA stop today......seemed everyone was using the Flagship ball/balls of the company they were sponsored by but yet maybe wasn't the ball to use???

Case in point........Marianne used a Mutant and a SuperFreak today.......but would have thought something longer and not as aggressive...(Crunch and RevMaster which I have seen her use on TV before) may have really set up well??

Just wondering on this as found it interesting watching today with the leaves left....(7-10's...flush 7.....lots of 10's with the ball losing energy at the pocket..)...just got me to thinkin...and that is usually a dangerous thing for me....;-))

From what I have seen, the ball reps let the bowler stick with the equipment they feel gives them the best look.  The best look during practice is not always the best look once the lights are on.  Much of what you see on TV is not always a matter of the ball being wrong, but perhaps not the ideal surface prep by the time they bowl.  And, lets not forget that often they are making expectations on reactions earlier in the week...and there is always the other caveat that hindsight is often even better than 20-20

If I were on a ball company's paid staff, and they asked me to use a particular ball, I'd use it.  If I thought it was a terrible choice, I'd first argue that it's better I win, wearing my Storm shirt or Ebonite shirt or Track shirt, than that I lose throwing a particular ball.  If they insisted, I'd do my best to make it work, but it would adversely affect my opinion of my bosses.

I agree with you about some of the ball choices, though.  Was that an X-Factor Reloaded that Liz was pointing into the pocket?  If so, why would you use such a strong ball on that shot, when they were snapping at the back as it was?  I really thought she needed to come up the back of the ball, rather than coming around the side the way she was.

Was that an original blue/red Apex Carolyn was using?

Carolyn was using either the Addiction or Obsession, I THINK it was an Addiction.  Cheryl and Liz were both using the Reloaded, but I think Cheryl actually had a great look with it.  I very rarely see Liz use anything but and Eraser Boost, so I was kinda surprised to see yet another different ball for the second straight week.

Michelle,

Agree hindsight is 20-20...but seeing as all the women were veterans and have bowled under the lights before...should expect the lanes to break down a bit more??

The thing that got me thinking was.....look at the two leading......straight up the board players......says to me the shot is probably up the boards more than crossing X number of boards.  Knowing that and knowing that the lights are going to have an effect on the condition....shouldn't the thought going in is ..........a weaker ball that will go long and not be too snappy on back??

Or am I completely clueless as usual??..lol

the BOWLER who happened to make the finals should use the ball he/she feels most comfortable with. in 1998 mike aulby won the abc masters for the third time using a brunswick urethane blitz. i'm sure the powers to be at brunswick would have rathered he used their latest and greatest ball but when you're mike aulby your ABILITY and track record rule everything else out.

Carolyn was using 2 different Addictions on the show today. Probably a very good choice because it was just smooth enough not to read the back of the pattern ( and because she won, duh !!! ).

As far as ball company incentives go, each company is similar in theory. They want you to use something as current as possible. Keep in mind some other factors though. The ladies may have been using the balls that you saw today all week long but under the camera lights ( and add the pressure of the show ), their look may have been a little different. The lanes transition differently under the hot lights and the pattern will break down differently.
