Interesting spare stats...from PBA site
« on: March 02, 2004, 01:21:36 AM »
Top 10 spare shooting percentages after last week looked like:

Spare Percentage Leaders (Including splits)
Rank /Name /Spares /Attempts/ Pct.
1. /Walter Ray Williams Jr. /364 /418 /87.08
2. /Tommy Delutz Jr. /354 /423 /83.69
3. /Chris Barnes /289 /346 /83.53
4. /Tim Criss /208 /250 /83.20
5. /Bob Learn Jr. /225 /274 /82.12
6. /Mika Koivuniemi /426 /521 /81.77
7. /Lonnie Waliczek /393 /484 /81.20
8. /Michael Haugen Jr. /299 /372 /80.38
9. /Robert Smith /271 /338 /80.18
10. /Patrick Allen /372 /465 /80.00

Granted, some of the patterns lend to a higher percentage of splits being left, but considering how much emphasis was always placed on "converting spares" it just seemed a little surprising to find that the 10th best spare shooter is still leaving one open every five non-strike frames.

Michelle, almost all of those open frames are splits.  The scores put up by the leaders are so high, that you have to string strikes to keep up.

This always results in a higher-than-normal number of splits, as you can't afford to simply plug along with clean games, waiting for the condition to change in your favor.
