problems with carry down
« on: November 15, 2003, 01:41:40 PM »

OK, for about a month on my thursday nite league i went 650-718-622-731, and was just rock n rollin on this league.   Well since then i have gone 580, 550, 480,535.

And i already knew that this house had a tougher shot, because of almost instant carry down, and the shot gets really tight.  Well i had been able to follow the shot when it would get tight, but for the past couple of weeks, its been tough to follow.

The lanes are wood, and shot normally for me starts out playing inside of 20, and out to about 12.  Well normally about the 5-7th frame you catch carry down, and hafta either change to a heavy hooking ball or move way right.

And i was normally able to do this.  But now it seems like no matter what i do, i cant seem to be able to play the shot.

The carry down, occurs between 15-10, basically a OB.  and there is a OB outside of 10 too,  so you hafta use a strong hooking ball and basically play a break point of board 9-5.

And basically i am lost in the sauce, which i think is a first for me cuz i normally crave carry down, so i can use my heavy hooking balls, but this is stupid, when i use a heavy oil ball and it hits the 3 pin.

So any help would be nice.   I have taken my Boost which i tried this past week, 11-14-03 and it worked nice for the first game then same thing.  And it out hooks most of my bowling balls, and comparable to my Reloaded.  I did take my Boost and dry sand it with some 800grit.

So if anyone has encountered this problem help me out!!!!!!

Here is what I did that worked on similar situatuions.  I normally hold the ball mid-chest high to start the approach.  I moved the ball to waist high and the slower speed let me play a similar line but allowed the ball to react even in the carrydown.  Another trick that some can do (I tried it and it is mighty hard for me) is look at the dots instead of the arrows when targeting to get the ball down sooner so it can start rolling faster.

More and more I find that speed control is much more effective than making angle changes.  I don't know why for sure and it isn't always true, but I suspect the volume of oil on the adult bumper bowling patterns is the main cause.  The other problem I have seen is when you have lots of retro-equipment being used it seems the carry down is much more pronounced than if you have more of the oil-soaking newer stuff being thrown in the same general area.

Splitz,

Well yea, its about 50/50 for this league i bowl on, some use new stuff and some use plastic or even Manhattan rubber lol...  So i new that would be a prob, but i always tend to keep and eye out for the ball not reacting, but it just happens all of a sudden.  i mean you could throw 7 shots all the same get the same reaction and the 8th shot wont even move.

its times like these which i wish i wouldnt have gotten rid of my Trauma ER, cuz it was sanded with 400grit and would be great for this condition when it happans lol.
