Hey guy's need a little help here. My driller just plugged and redrilled a thumb for me with lane concepts one hour quick plug. He said i should try it without a slug as the plug would feel just as well or better than a slug. well i love it. i found the plug online pretty cheap and have a couple 1 1/4 cylinders to use. my question has anyone used this plug for custom slugt..etc.. Do yall think it would work? Thanks for any help

A lot of molds(I say a lot since I don't know if it is all of them) are made using quick plug of some kind.  Myself, I didn't like the feel as I couldn't get them as smooth as I would have liked.  And, they carve and sand strangely to me.  As for others, I know many people who use them all the time.

I have been doing this for a while now. I layout the ball, drill a 1 1/4" hole where the thumb is going to be, plug the hole, then drill my thumb hole into the center of the plug. Takes longer but is cheaper than a $5 slug and they feel good to me. Plus you can make them any color you want. Where did you get the 1 1/4" cylinders? I have been thinking of making my own slugs but don't know where to get the mold.

I bought a PVC pipe about 6' long with an inside diameter of 1 1/4" from Lowes for 3.00. Then I bought a couple of rubber stoppers for 2.00 ea. In all I spent 10.00 and I have two molds and about 5' of pipe left for creating my home made thumb duplication molds.

I have made 20+ slugs now. It works great.

pin-chaser, doesn't the urethane plug material stick to the inside of the plastic pipe? Is there some kind of release agent you put on the inside of the pipe? How do you get the slug out of the pipe?

Moon57,

NOT ONCE has it stuck! I use quick plug (dries in 15 minutes). I take the plug off the bottom and push it out the bottom. IT works great!!!

I also made my own thumb hole duplicator like the extracticator kit. I use oomoo 30 from smooth-on... http://www.smooth-on.com/Silicone-Rubber-an/c2_1113_1136/index.html for the actul thumb hole mold. It works perfectly. And using the PVC PIPE and plug material.. I put this together for 1/3 the price of the extractacator kit.

Sounds similar to what I do, but I wasn't able to find PVC that was exactly 1 1/4" inside diameter.  I used a couple of different methods - made a mold of an actual slug and then used that to make my slugs, but it was just easier to order an exactication tube from Buddies.

I don't remember what silicone I'm using, but it wasn't nearly that expensive.  Downside is that is was a 1:10 ratio by weight, and a complete b*tch to get the mixture just right.  I imagine the sample kit is more than enough for the home driller, and the 1:1 ratio makes it that much easier!

Moon, you can get a release agent if you worried about it - it basically amounts to wd-40, silicone spray, or something similar to Pam (cooking spray).

Just look up casting, resin, and/or urethane and you'll find it.
