Why do you really care what's next?
« on: July 02, 2009, 08:00:40 AM »
I am actually serious about this.  Was talking about this with a bowling buddy and the topic of conversation came up.

I was never in the 'ball a week' club in terms of new balls being developed.  Being an avid Hammer thrower, I owned more than enough of Fab's best.  I bought stuff for me and I also bought plenty to sell off later.  When Ebonite bought Faball, I bought some of the Blade, Diesels and Vicious line and went as far as the Big Blues, Hawgs and Deals, but I never continued on with buying anything after that.  I just didn't see the need to keep getting the next 'great' thing.

And now that I throw Visionary only, I've sort of maintained that same habit, though I have bought some of the newer stuff and have drilled it.  Though I do have some that I won't drill and really purchased it because I support them.

So my question.....why do we really care what Company X is coming out with next?  Do we need another ball that badly?  Is the new ball really filling a huge gap in out lineup?  Or is this just the way society is?

I like to look out for what's next for a few reasons. There might be a new ball coming that provides for a reaction I currently don't have. I've always found having something different is good. More often, I'm wearing out an existing piece and I'm keeping my eye out for a replacement.

There will always be bowlers who buy the 'next greatest thing' because that's just what they do. I've read a lot about this mystical beast, but I haven't run into too many. More often, I think better bowlers will keep their eyes open for a piece that can enhance their game, and make a move on it if it fits at the time.

throw a cell and tell me 4 year old hammer stuff reacts the same. the cell continues like no other ball period. best core ever made.

I had talked to this guy on my league last year thet gave me all his secrets to scoreing.he made it very clear to me that he has been bowling for 30 years and he was the sh!t.the # 1 reason to scoreing and carrying a high average for him was that he used a new ball.once a ball got 50 games on it he said it's time for a new one.thought that was good for a laugh!
as for me,I lake to play around with different used stuff and keep the ones I like,on my rack:
Awesome Revs
Awesome Flip
Track Phenom
Brunswick Intense Inferno
Storm Tropical
Storm ThunderFlash
Hammer Black Urethane
a skull ball and a Randolf Classic
not planning on anything new except one,a desperado due to the urethane/asymetric core combo.this is to replace my TFlash.

Some of my point in this is that there are only so many boards on the alley.  At the start of the season, said manufacturer creates a new ball that has more hook than anything else they made before....easily outhooking their last ball by 6-8 boards.  Then 6 months later....same thing....outhooking by another 6-8 boards.

When they release again, assuming they go for another 6-8 boards, they will have now created something that hooks a whole 1/2 lane or more than anything else.  Does this ball really stay on one lane??

I agree and disagree.  Read my response to Ryan where I stated I had a Hi-Rev, Bravo Pearl and a SledgeHammer each with well over 500 games on them.  I was still averaging anywhere from 213-218 in leagues.

A new ball does roll so much better than what you've currently got.  I do think that depending on the company, that statement has more truth to it than others, but I do understand it.

LIke it has been stated, people just want to have a new toy.

I do agree with several of your statements though.  I have made the comment several times, there is a point where more hook becomes too much hook.  The biggest thing that gets me are what is suppose to be low performance equipment.  They keep trying to ake it stronger and stronger, for the more bankg for your bucks sales pitch.  To be this has 2 setbacks.

1.  The Very rev dominant players, need the low technology to help combat drier conditions.  If these pieces keep getting stronger, then this takes this purchase out of play.  and
2.  If you keep getting the lower priced equipment to hook more and more, then this will take away from the sales of your higher end equipment.  Especially with todays current economy, bowlers are wising up and realizing they don't need the high dollar equipment even for higher volumes of oil, especially in terms of the THS patterns.  This cuts into the profit margins for the Ball companies, so I wonder about the thinking at times.

I personally love older equipment, due to me being with a high rev/tilt combo, I am almost limited exclusively to the older technology to use nowadays.  Even with me basically taking 4-5 years off, my V2 Dry that I use for league I am sure is approaching the 2000 game mark, and its gives me the best reaction now in terms of drier patterns and house conditions.

It's need and want. Over time you will need something new be it is due to ware and tear on a bowling ball. Or it just stops having the ability to do what it use to do so well.(or it commits ball suicide and cracks in half)

What ever the case, most people probably buy more then they should.(guilty x3)

This applies to a lot of things though, not just bowling.

A lot of guys on here are pro shop owners.  It's partially our job to throw everything new, and a perk.  Our shops drill Try Before You Buy balls and I throw every single one so I can better inform the customer, match them up to the right ball, make them happy, all so they'll be back in the future.  In addition, when you're a weekend warrior like some of us, the newest equipment might earn you a fatter check on Sunday, thus well worth it.  I bowled a local sport shot event before the release of the Virtual Gravity with some big name locals who have also won many regional titles among them.  One guy we drill for though had gotten a Virtual Gravity out on tour before anyone else had one and it simply matched up better than any other ball in the building and he cleaned up with it.  Doesn't mean it was all the ball.  But it definitely gave him a different look and carry the rest of us didn't have.
