The league I'm on has 21 units of oil, 41 ft in length. Is that considered light oil? I'm using an old 14# Tribal but think I need a lighter ball.  Planning on getting a 13# Hyroad but it's recommended for medium oil.  Sure was a lot easier getting a ball back in the 60s, had to have your name engraved to find it.

Thanks Geoff, it's a typical house shot, anything will work, need a lighter ball anyhow until I get back in shape.  Can't hurt anything except my bank account.

FWIW I looked at the book at the counter and apparently the house shot (where my sport shot league is) is 41 feet and uses 15.5 mL of oil. I've bowled on the house shot a few times and it feels pretty medium, although 15.5 sounds very light. It's possible that mL and units of oil might not be the same, even if they're used interchangeably.

Our senior league just switched to High Street, 44ft pattern, total oil volume is 21.1mL.

Another pattern used in other leagues is Wall Street, 40ft long, total oil volume of 19.7mL.  They had used this pattern for a couple of weeks for the seniors and they were not happy with it, complaints that the lanes hooked too much abounded.  With the seniors, I am sure it was the shorter length, not the volume, that was the main cause.  I think in the past, most of the senior league patterns were 43-44 ft.

I can't really comment on whether units and mL are the same or not. 

Also, since I have just recently started bowling again, I could not compare the two patterns, my timing and control/accuracy were so far off, all low scores were on me, not the lane patterns. 

You should also look at the ratio.  A typical house shot is approx. 41' with 19 mils at about a 7:1 ratio so the outsides will hook.  Use 19 mils at 41' with a 2:1 ratio and it's going to play very different.
