Speed control on sport/PBA shots....
« on: June 23, 2005, 09:29:52 PM »
I've been working with my coach on trying to keep my ball speed down for my ball to read sport shot patterns better. Due to the fact that I have a low track combined with stroker type revs, if I throw the ball a mph or two too fast, the ball doesn't read the breakpoint as well as I tend to leave more single pins.

My coach is of the belief that I should still start my ball at waist high and just get my feet a little faster in motion in order to get the ball to go slower when I'm at my release point. He says if I get any lower in my set up stance it wouldn't be condusive to proper leverage at my release point as I've had a tendency to dip with the shoulders forward on the last step.

Any suggestions to try to knock that mph or two off the ball speed would be greatly appreciated. I'm not against all the spare shooting I've been doing- it's just that I've been averaging 13-15 single pins a 3 game set for my sport shot challenge league, and I know that getting the ball to read the lanes a little better would probably knock that total down by 2-3 a set...

The best way I know to slow ball speed down is to shorten the approach 1-2 feet. Everything else equal.

You can also keep adjusting where the ball starts in your swing.  The lower the ball is in your starting position, the lower the backswing which lowers the speed. Remember to keep your pushaway consistent though.  I know when I lower the ball, sometimes I start wimping out on the pushaway and then my timing goes off.

D <~~~~ Used to be terrible wiffing 10 pins.  Now through much practice, can wiff any single pin spare at any time.

Lowering the ball in your stance is the best thing I've found. The interesting thing about starting ball position is that if you don't put any muscle behind the ball (which you shouldn't if you want to be consistent on anything harder than a THS) the time it takes your ball to make a pendulum motion will be exactly the same regardless of how high off the floor it starts. This means that your timing will not be effected at all by how high your ball starts, but the speed at which you throw it will be.
