lane courtesy
« on: September 15, 2009, 03:50:25 PM »
Our mixed league has always been 1 lane courtesy.  A bunch of new teams joined and some of them want 2 lanes. But its in our rules that 1 lane is the way we are doing it.  So this one guy steps up on 41, so I step up on 43. He immediately steps off, stares at me, and sets his ball down.  I just turned back to the lane and bowled.

Same situation again 4 frames later.  This time he steps off, throws his hands up in the air.  His teammate tells him we do one lane here. But the rest of the night he is a jerk and steps off throwing a fit.

if you want 2 lanes, thats fine.  Just dont stare people down and throw your arms up when someone gets onto the lane 2 lanes from you.

Sorry...just venting.

yes it is, he backed off three times prior it was the 4th one that i took it out on him, he was fried the rest of the set

it pissed me off cause i am extra careful anyway, I use the forward set of dots and I am typically in front of guys, so I watch to make sure I am not standing in front of someone

First, that guy is an idiot. Second of all, tell a league officer about it and if your league clearly states you only need 1 lane to the left and right then that is what it is.

This isn't the PBA regional tour for Christ's sake.

On the flip side it's better then new bowlers that are oblivious to lane courtesy like they are teenage open play bowlers with house balls and like to double jump.

Yeah, everywhere that I've bowled has observed 1 lane courtesy during league, except in Hawaii.  For those who might bowl in Hawaii, mainly during leagues and tourneys, everyone who bowls regularly out here observes 2 lane courtesy.  I guess it's just a matter of preference to the bowler on whether it bothers them or not.  Like one comment mentioned earlier, someone 2 lanes down doesn't really affect you bowling unless you're just looking for a reason for a bad shot or lack of focus.  I observe the 2 lane rule as well, but if someone is new to the islands or just doesn't know, I don't throw a fit when they jump up 2 lanes down and storm off the lane, I take it as practice for focus and just concentrate on making a good shot.

One lane is plenty. Two lanes is the general practice in our league although the rule is one lane.

Personally, I don't think one lane is necessary. I think that one should be able to block out distractions on the left and right. Just don't come up from behind me and grab my arm, and I'll be o.k.

Most of the guys that want two lanes have been watching the PBA on T.V. too long. I really think that the pros complaining because a baby cries or someone coughs is really too much.

The league I am in changed from the 2 lane to 1 lane this year. I honstly don't like 2 lanes at all. Yeah it is nice but not needed. I bowled in a league in Sioux Falls that had some mentally handicapped bowlers who would run up on the lane next to you. So I got use to having someone running up besides me.

I always used one lane courtesy until I started bowling in my current mens league (about 9 years ago) I was told we give 2 lanes of courtesy on this league. I dont really care I can bowl with 1 or 2 lanes, it does not bother me.
When I bowl tourneys I use one lane as they normally announce that is all you should give.

IMO two lane courtesy is a joke. I've come across it during practice a few times and have made one person move. The other times I just gave in and laughed to myself about it.

In leagues it absolutely should only be 1 lane. In a tournament setting of any type it should be 2 lanes.

What I always find funny is in league, lots of guys want 2 lanes.  But, these same guys go to Nationals, where the stated rule is 1 lane, and they're able to bowl just fine.  I don't concentrate in league, and I average 200+.  I concentrate very hard at Nationals and if I average 190 I consider it to be a success.

I'm not sure what our official league rule is, but most guys give 2 lanes.  If you're paying attention, you can give 2 lanes without slowing things down, but that means everyone has to be ready to go when it's their turn.

I agree with the OP, if you want 2 lanes fine, if someone distracts you fine, but don't try to be a hard***, just put your ball down for a second and start over.

Sometimes, you have to give 2 lanes because the manic two lanes over has to run out his strike shot.

Wow...did you know we are talking about sanctioned USBC leagues? Even normal non sanctioned leagues use 1 lane courtesy. Do us a favor and don't ever bowl any league with a comment like that! No one on this board can take you seriously with a comment like that unless your so good you don't need it which in that case I find hard to believe. Lane courtesy is mostly about distractions but is natural human common manners. It would be like cutting you off on the freeway without signaling. I'm not totally ripping you even though offended by this moronic comment but please understand there are serious bowlers on this board and on this planet who take this sport seriously. Lane etiquette has always been part of this game whether you understand it or not.

If I had it my way, I wish USBC had a mandatory pair lane courtesy like on the PBA circut and respectable scratch tournaments.
