summer sport league
« on: August 06, 2014, 11:39:00 AM »
Our 12 week summer sport league ended last week.  It was a challenge and a pleasure to bowl even though no really big scores were shot.  It was match play with 4 games and total receiving points.  We used 6 different patterns and each pattern was used for 2 weeks.  Nobody had over 900 (4 games) and only one person averaged over 200 for the 12 weeks..

This week was a tournament on the Badger pattern.  Note to self: don't bowl on the Badger pattern until you learn to bowl on heavy oil.

Ours finishes us this Tuesday.  16 weeks, 16 patterns.  Don Carter for the last week and Detroit for the top 8 roll off.  Badger was fine for me, average right around 200 the last 2 years.  I love Wolf, shot just under 1000 for 4 this year.  The US Open was the real monster, didn't break 700.

A lot depends on the house.  Bowled on Badger in two different anvil lane houses about the same age.  One had a 15 year old Ion machine.  Not sure what the other was using, but it was newer.  In the latter house we bowled our roll off on Badger.  It played pretty good.  Several of us were 200+ on it.  In the house with the old Ion machine it was almost unplayable.  Nobody averaged 185.  The track never opened up inside 10.  Only shot to the pocket was a jam shot up 8 board for me.  I averaged 6 pocket hit splits over 4 games every night.

We had exactly the same experience as the second house you bowled at.  We bowled 3 games and then had a cut.  The cut was 543 with most of the scores in the 550s.  One person was over 600 with 605.  He moved pairs for the next round and shot 150.  It was throw it and hope; not really bowling.

The house that scored really bad on the Badger has the old Ion machine, that is not doing a good job stripping.  Even though Badger is a 52 foot pattern, most of it is buff out.  When the machine doesn't strip, you get a lot more carrydown from 40 feet on.  Saw similar issues with a 35 foot pattern in that house that had way more hold area than there should have been.  Got the opposite effect on the short pattern where the carrydown really set a point shot.  I averaged almost 220 on the 35 foot pattern for 12 games, less than 185 on the Badger.
