Lane Oil Question
« on: December 02, 2010, 10:47:38 AM »
Are lane oils specific to the kind of surface you are bowling. If a house has  synthetic would they use one type of oil and if they had wood lanes would they use another type or is there just 1 type of oil that is for use on either surface. If there is a difference what would be the result of putting oil made for synthetic lanes on wood.

Yes.  Some lane oils are better on certain surfaces.  Lane surfaces have different hardnesses.  Lane oils come in different viscosities and lubicities(slickness).  The kind of lane oil used is mostly dictated by the type of machine used to put it down and clean it off.  You cannot use high viscosity oil with a wick machine for example.  As far as lanes go, the harder the surface, the less the ball hooks.  On hard surfaces like synthetics, you need an oil that doesn''t carrydown badly.  On softer surfaces like guardian or wood, you can get away with a little more carrydown.  With wood lanes, the type of finish comes into play as well.  Kegel.net is probably the best source for any other questions you have about this.

Thanks for the response, I was told the house I bowl in was using oil made for synthetics for their woods lanes because it was cheaper. I know the lanes don't seem to hold up as well and and when they start to break down they seem to get real flaky.

This chart pretty much says it all.  When I was a mechanic, Defense and Offense cost the same.
