Poll: Anyone use a SLIDE SOCK?
« on: January 23, 2005, 02:10:09 PM »
Hi everyone,

Just wanted to take a poll on who uses one of those "Slide Socks," to aid in their sliding on different approaches. I've bowled in many different houses and although I do have the SST5's, I hardly ever change my soles or heels.

Although, I do on occassion feel the need to change soles, but I'm never comfortable. I'm thinking of trying one of those after-market "Slide Socks."

I'm going to bowl at the Texas Station in Vegas next month and on of my buddies at the bowling alley told me that their approaces are sticky and that a "Slide Sock," might do the trick.

Anyone out there with a testimonial on any of these "Slide Socks?"
Thanks!

I'm also curious to read these responses. I have the SST6's as well and can only find one sole and heel combination that works. The other soles either stick too much or slide too much, same with the other heels. When I have problems sliding I sometimes use some Easy Slide, but I know that lots of bowlers get real pissy about someone using Easy Slide so I am seeking an alternate solution.

I don't personally use them, but they sell like crazy here.  Everyone that uses them swears by them.  If you have trouble sticking this is the answer I'm told by many friends that have gone through many of them.

I used to use a Sock.  It wasn't the aftermarket sock it was actually one i came up with myself.  just rolled up a sock a certain way on my shoes and i had a perfect slide.  only problem i had was sometimes i'd slide a bit too far or uncontrolably.  i now use sst6's and don't use the sock anymore.  not sure if the aftermarket sock would have the problem with uncontrollability or not.  hmmmm....

Quite a few bowlers around here use a slide sock. I use one
because it gives me a consistent slide. Also we have some
problem around here with the approaches being sticky when
the humidity is high. I bought one of the Ebonite socks but
it wore out pretty quickly. Now I just cut a regular sock
and use it. That is what most of the bowlers here use.

They slide like a SOB, but a lot of people round here use them.  I tried one once cause I was sticking a lot on synthetic approaches so the proshop owner let me put one on and test it, well thats all I needed I might as well had ice skates on it slides way too much, I have heard that you have to break them in but unless you have glue on your approaches its not feasible.  SST #7,#8 soles slide more than I need I never go above #6 and the #10 teflon is as much slide or more than the sock so i am not sure why people with SST's don't use this sole.  Lots of people however use them around here on wood approaches too and that is where I have no trouble sliding.  Just get one of the local shops to lt you test one before you waste howeve much they cost.

Somethings that people should know about slide socks....   They are not all created the same.  So you buy a slide sock in the pro shop what did you get?  Well it may have a felt, cotton, flannel or some other kind of bottom.  Wonder why they are so slick and slippery?  Wondered why some brands wear out in a couple of days?    Some are one sizes fits most?  Cut tube socks sometimes are very slick and do not adapt to approach surface.  Some socks wear out quickly or bunch up under your foot because of the materials they are made of.  Some manufactures use inexpensive materials regardless of how they perform to keep cost down.

Did you know that there is a Slide Sock that normally last over 6 months or more bowling 3+ times a week and it's reversible.  There is a slide sock that works on slick or tacky conditions wood or synthetic and does not use light weight materials.  There is a slide sock that comes in two normal sizes and custom manufactures to size 20!  Ever seen a slide sock designed specifically for the wide shoe footprint???  There is one and it's patented!

The best thing I can tell you is to compare products because there are many types of Slide Socks.  Just because you bought one with a logo of a major bowling company on it does not mean it may be right for you.  Most pro shops can not tell you the difference and many buy what they carry based on their cost.  To be honest for them it might not be as interesting as the new bowling ball made by X Company.  How many really research bowling tape?

There is a night and day difference between products.

As synthetic approaches have become more prevalent I see them more and more.

They open a new house here in the last few months. It has the new Pro Anvilane approaches that are textured. They had a lot of problems with bowlers sticking and I would say that 30% to 40% of the bowlers have gone to using slide socks.

I carry one. A couple on my team uses them all the time.

I might mention I was directing my original post to the amf/ebonite ball manufactored socks in my post and not against "the bowlers slide sock", I have had no experience with this porduct but I have checked the website a couple times before and it does look a lot better.

I've been using the Bowler's Slide Sock for about 8 months now, and it's everything Smash49 says.  I bowl at least 6 games per week, and have not yet worn out the first side.  I'm telling my customers to buy well made but less expensive shoes and use the BSS with them.  --  JohnP

No, I prefer not to slide all that much. With the syntheic approaches around here and the wonderful sub-zero temp lately the approaches have felt more like a skating rink. I have demoted myself to my #6 sole on my ABS shoes (no slide) and I am still licking my heel/wiping my sole before my approach. However in the summer, a lot of bowlers use them because the approaches get very tacky with the humidity and guys need to slide. I break out my #4 sole and am fine. We do sell a lot of them out of the shop in the summer though.
