I've bowled on the beaten path several times over the last few years, as our state tournament is bowled on that. I'm normally about 17 mph, 375-400 revs. I've found at my normal speed pin down balls have worked very well, depending on the backend friction of the surface you're bowling on. If you've got nice backends I've had the best luck with those.
I have however, bowled the best when I slowed my ball speed down and used the pin up stuff. That may just be coincidental though. All the beaten path has taken for me is a couple board move to the right (I bowl on a pretty heavy-ish ths regularly) and maybe slowing it down a little and I'm all set. I've grown to like this shot quite a bit.
As far as how to attack it, I've had the best luck throwing medium strongish equipment and playing outside. I've seen success from all different angles though, and once your stuff starts jumping on you, don't be afraid to move in and bank it off of that dry with something a little more aggressive. Good luck and enjoy!
