Lane play for PBA patterns
« on: November 09, 2008, 03:05:31 AM »
I am starting going to a tournament(small sweeper) however I have never rolled on a PBA pattern and would like advice as to ways to play each(preferably more in depth than the PBA site). Thank you also I am unsure at this time which pattern so I dont know what to take where to start(general idea)I throw medium revs and medium to low bal speed.

Synthetics in pretty good condition lanes are known as one of the harder lanes due to being heavier oil with a little flatter of a pattern.

Do not walk in there with any preconceived notions on how the patterns will play.  Look for the friction area and know the length of the pattern.  The earlier your ball hooks, the further away from the headpin it needs to be to create good entry angle.  Don't overthink things and keep it simple (straighter is greater oftentimes!).  The backends will probably be pretty clean with a good bit of oil up front, so you don't need to try to force the ball to hook.  Just roll it off your fingertips with an open hand and let the ball do the work for you.

Yea that what I had thought however I was hoping someone knew where the dry generally is on these patterns as off the dry stuff seems to react too strong unless its down lane(so Im looking for general parts of the lanes to avoid.

That's the problem, it's not JUST the pattern.  It's also the lane surface.  The patterns play different at every center.  It's all about where the friction spots on the lanes themselves are.  Learn that in practice and you'll be golden.

The lanes dont have really any friction spot like I was saying its pretty flat and long until you wear it down pretty fresh lanes overall.

In that case, they should actually play fairly close to how they describe them in the videos, etc. on the PBA site.  HOWEVER, trust me, the less you know going in, the better.  When people bowl on a PBA pattern and are told the name, they do WORSE than if they bowl on a PBA pattern and aren't told which shot it is.  Watch the ball reaction and adjust from there.

Alright thank you very much. However what would you suggest I take?

Awesome flip(drilled to get down and boogy on the backends)
WMB with control drilling
xxxl drilled pretty aggresive(pin right and slightly below ring with x hole)
Purple rhino pro (drilled pin about 2inches out from ring straight out with 1inch x hole almost to core)
purple sumo smooth in medium oil strong off dry
Gold rhino pro (drilled to be long and strong)
red pearl hammer(just drilled up)
original nail(just drilled up)
Awesome hook drilled to be used down and in(will roll out on you otherwise)
Highly polished gravity shift designed to be long and strong

xxxl is my normal spare ball so itll probably go.

I'm not familiar with many of those balls to be honest.  However, just remember that polish and skid-snap equipment can get you in trouble in a hurry on a tougher shot.

Go to PBAExperience.org Under the "training" links, there are videos that show how strokers, tweeners, and crankers typically play the patterns. Keep in mind that there are several factors that could make the patterns you see play differently, but at least this can give you a ballpark to start with.

Thank you very much and yes I prefer the more skid snap reaction but do have a couple duller balls.

If it was me,I would go with Awesome Flip,WMB,Awesome hook,Shift,Pearl red Hammer,XXXL.At least you'll have different angles to throw with later in the tournament.
I hate ten pins but love the game of bowling with just the right ball to take them out.

Seems to be a pretty good idea for a lineup. Thank you bowlingnut.

Well the lanes used the annex with the wood lanes(pretty fresh wood) and pulled the cheetah pattern. I could not roll this pattern to save my life(plastic was overhooking unless I hung the gutter and when I did ALL my equipment struggled to flip? Was rolling my xxxl from 30 to 6 and it would come through the head. Awesome flip and wmb rolling same line but outside of that took out the 3 pin. Only thing that worked was hanging my red pearl hammer(original fabal one).over the gutter however this is VERY hard for me to repeat.
