Title: Lane Play Help
Post by: Strapper_Squared on August 24, 2014, 02:08:11 PM
Stopped by my local lanes for a little practice this morning.  My typical session involves several games working on a specific aspect (this morning I was working on my pushaway), combined with spare shooting.  I throw at a spare on the first ball, then try to cover (usually some combination including a headpin remains) on the second.  I throw several games in this fashion, then try to finish up with 1 game bowled as if in league/tournament to put everything together (and to stoke my ego a bit).

I could tell from the first several games that the pattern not a house shot or at least not a typically one.  A regional qualifier was help in the house this weekend, so assume it was left over from the morning.  Anyway, there was very little hold down the middle (about 13-27) and very little recovery outside of that.

Playing around 8 could get to the pocket, but it was very speed and line sensitive.  A small miss (location or speed/revs) and miss the pocket.  More towards the middle (swinging around 15, 16, 17), and I just couldn't get enough length even with a relative mild polished ball.  Moving further inside, (24-25 at the arrows),I could get to the pocket, but just couldn't get recovery/angle on the back for carry (may be a combination of equipment and ability).  Any small variations in launch angle would miss the pocket as well.

I don't run into these conditions often, but they absolutely kill me.  The last few times I have seen these has been at nationals after the transition.

What is your typical strategy/approach to attack this type of condition?

When I hit that condition I play your deep line.  With a predictable pin up solid, like a VR solid.  I adjust my speed accordingly and play different hand positions. In this case, curling my pinky would get the ball to face up and carry, usually.

I would also play the deep angle.  First order of business is always to find the pocket.  I like strong pearls for carry from these angles.
