Lane Play Question
« on: January 24, 2011, 01:01:22 PM »
I'm bowling in a league that puts out a relatively short and light oil pattern.  Any shot "up the boards" is comple tely out of play as it just takes off even when throwing plastic.  I've struggled with mild reactive equipment as when I move inside to get enough angle to hit the pocket, I completely lose carry.  A few weeks back I left  13 single pins over the course of the night (still shot 600 though).

Two weeks ago I decided to change the surface on my Cell... going up to 4000 grit and lots of polish.  This seems to have allowed the ball to get down the lane and still have enough on the backend to kick out the corners.

Two weeks in a row, I have made it into the 10th with a shot at 279 for the first game.  My issue is that starting out, I am at 16-17 at the arrows and swinging the ball out to around 8-9.  I'm moving a board to two boards left per frame, trying to stay in enough oil.  By the end of the 1st game, I'm in to 21-22 at the arrows with quite a bit of angle through the heads.  Once I get to this point, I seem to lose any and all carry.

I have a Black/C buzzsaw (PK18 cover and lower RG, low diff diamond) that I shined up to 4K and polish.. this ball is about 8-10 weaker than the Cell...  I have tried moving right with it, but its really sensitive to the "dirt" and wants to jump early.  If I stay inside with it, its over/under.  I have a khameleon (PK18 cover with a little stronger core)  that I finished with 2K and rough buff.  This ball seems to roll OK and I can get to the pocket, but again no carry.

My other option is a 900G Link Pearl.  I put a little surface on this ball (500) and overtop I put a shine with a grit-free polish.  I'm hoping that due to the weaker cover/pearl it will get some length, but with the surface underneath, not give me the over/under.  My plan this week is to try switching to the 900G as soon as I run out of room with the Cell.

How would you go about attacking this type of condition?  I'm looking for a plan B if/when I get into trouble again.

I've shot 240 and 260 the last two weeks starting out and ended up struggling to break 600.

Thanks,

How about hand position tricks? I know the trouble of balls reading the lane too early, or jumping at the break point when I use my strong release hand position (way behind the ball, with forward roll).

While polish is basically a good technical solution, it still can not be enough - you add length, but the ball gets even more jumpy. I had so far good success with drastic release changes, esp. with hand positions - a suitcase grip (resulting in 90° side rotation) with a straight wrist has been very effective (promoting skid and keeping the hook rather straight for me, due to average revs), as well as release with the hand behind the ball but a broken-back wrist (taming the reaction down, but not sooo effective on dry lanes - could work for speed dominant players, though).

Dizzy is spot on. Weaker ball with weaker hand positions. Often times pearls will jump off the end of patterns like this due to rev/bite effect. I used to kill a house with a short pattern and jumpy back ends by using older/weaker dull solid resins and a couple particles. These will allow you to tame down the break point by using up some energy in the front.

Try the Buzzsaw at 2000 with no polish from the deeper line you spoke of. This should eliminate the over/under you spoke of and hopefully return well enough to get the corners out.

Try looking your target a couple feet down and a board or two right if it starts tapping from this angle. And PM me if you do try any of this with the results....you have my interest peaked.

Also, possibly a ball with a high RG (late rev up) and very low diff. (not so jumpy off the dry)....something along the lines of a MOTIV Recon or equivilant......just a thought.

What about something like a 5" Pin MoJave at 4000 with UFO polish from Valentino?  This is what I go to when they are scorched, if it's too much it's XXXL Starburst time......

Along with what Dizzy said, I've found good success using a Tropical Heat with a 1 1/2" pin from pap with the cg and "mb" in my track area.  Extreme length with minimal flare, creates a very smooth, clean reaction.

The Recon and Recon pearl are phenomenal on the conditions we are discussing.

Yup. Have a solid Recon which is a great, controllable ball, but it needed polish for me to become handy. My favorite wepaon of choice is still my black Pure Hammer. Also very smooth, and the low RG core get the ball easily into a forward roll despite the suitcase grip release. Very effective for me, and more reliable than the Recon, but that's me.

Find a urethane bowling ball like a storm natural w/ a weak drilling and put polish on it.  It is the weakest ball in my bag and it is so smooth through the front part, mid-lane and off the break point.  There is nothing jumpy, or over/under reaction about a urethane bowling ball, and it would be the most ideal bowling ball to use on broken down conditions.  This is my two cents and I know Imma only get a penny for my thoughts...lmao.

Either go Urethane or I like to got to a weak ball with a weak drilling for dry lanes. Something a long the lines of a Roto Grip Dark Star with a long pin up drilling will get down the lane plenty and still has enough cover and core to pop at the break point. I think all of your equipment is for medium oil and up and you need true light oil equipment.

solid 610 set... LOL.  with a little more speed and trying to put nothing on the ball, I was able to play significantly further right than normal.  I swapped my normal plethora of 10 pins for a lot of 10 pins with a couple 9's and a few 4 pins mixed in.  This house is so dry that after three games, I had a white "burn" ring around my track (and the surface was just cleaned up and polished before starting tonight).

you could try a Pin-up drilling... like 2inchs above your fingers, with the CG either slightly to the left or right, or @ a 45degree angle......

yeah.. I may play around with something.. give it a shot.  A few yrs back I found a NIB Coral Triton .. I drilled with a short pin to PAP, cg near palm and it rolled well.  Enough length and a smoother backend to roll up.

I'm still under the belief that any shot can be killed.. its just a2 matter of finding the right line, speed, revs, equipment, etc.
