lane play question?
« on: September 14, 2008, 06:24:45 AM »
I bowl in a league where lanes start hooking a bunch after game one.  My starting position of 20 looking 14 to 8 at the breakpoint. Im using a Black Widow solid with the glaze, and everthing is fine. Then they start hooking, as I move I end up swinging the ball after game two. standing 34 to 20 out to about the 10 board. Im now throwing a old stinger low flare. But now my carry is here and there. A friend of mind who is a better bowling than me ask me if I have something stronger. I say yes but insist that my strong ball will be way to strong to use now right? He says no just try it. Well with reluctance I got out  my Terminator, He has me move back right 5 boards, and the stronger ball flat out start ripping the rack and the back end move is not as violent Its not hooking like the weaker ball. Can some of you good bowlers explain to me how this can be? as i would have never even considered that ball change or choice thanks. Im 51yrs old and frome the plastic and urethane era. please explaine what happened.

You were using the carry down to your advantage, the strong particle coverstock tends to smooth things out as it is, and it likes oil so it just reacted well to the oil you pushed down and out during the earlier games, I do this often with my Alter Ego or Awesome Revs.

Considering that the Terminator is earlier and smoother than the BWS, what you're getting is a controlled amount of midlane burn, with just enough retained energy to crush the pocket. YOur friend made a good educated approximation. The Terminator might have been a fortuitous guess, since its stock cover is a light shine. It's a tricky balance to burn off just enough energy to not hook early and yet retain enough for hitting power/

I agree with Charlest another factor might be that by tightening the line you are keeping the ball in the middle puddle longer and not getting to the dry so early.
