I generally average in the 200-218 range (it obviously depends on the shot). In my wed. night league I have started out with a 775 and a 766. Obviously I am not going to average 250+ over the course of the season. Most years I start in the 190s and work my way up. I don't bowl much in the summer, so it usually takes a few weeks to lock in. This year I haven't been able to miss. This is a handicap league. I'm afraid I'll be a detriment to the team this year because of my inevitable drop in average. Has anyone else ever been in this predicament?

yes... been there.... done it.... suffered the consequences.

I started my first handicap league (house league) with exactly the average you do not get handicap anymore.... doh!
Dropped during the league season and in the end I really thought it would have been better to sandbag those first games...
On the other hand... I never do that.

Sounds like you have a nice challenge on your hands. Keep that 250 average or lose a lot of games until your average catches up with your abilities. All of my big leaps in average have come over summers where I average 8-10 pins higher than the previous season and I want to maintain that into the next year.

That's ridiculous. Bowl your best each night, and if your teammates have a problem it's probably jealousy. Were they complaining when your scores were so high?
The fact is that even if your average drops some, high average bowlers tend to be great spare shooters, too, which often makes or breaks you in a handicap league.
There's also the psychological effect it (high avg.) may have on your opponent. Although I'm not intimidated anymore, I used to be so impressed with the higher average bowlers that I'd try too hard to keep up with them and end up bowling less than I should have had I relaxed. Just my .02.

well be thankful you don't get fined for shooting under average in my league it is 50 cents for everygame you are 20 pins under average

In all seriousness don't let it bother you, you will come back down to earth eventually we all do use it has a challege how long can you keep it up their?

If there is a cap average on handicap as long as you make that score it isn't hurting your team.

I've started the out bowling a 604 and 701 the first two weeks, I finished last year with a 191 ave and have a goal of 200+ for this year. I always figure to bowl the best that I can, as I know I will have up weeks and down weeks. I have helped the team win 6 out of 8 the first two weeks, it is a team effort if I have a down week then hopefully we will someone else bowling well that week.

Unfortunately the team is 2-4 so far this year. Everyone else is bowling poorly. These good games are not equaling points. I'm not sure what the handicap is based on, but I think it's 90% of 250. It may be a long year.

WOW!!

I am very surprised the league would have voted that in since I doubt anyone consistently averages 250 in your league.

I hate seeing handicap when it is even 80% of 230.

Who says it has to drop? Why not keep making it go higher and higher until you hit around 230-240? What is with everyone thinking things will always get bad eventually?

Heck that is nothing my team is $1 if you are just 1 pin under average. Cost me $2 last night and I shot 655. Also It cost you a $1 if you get hung if you get hung with an open it is $2. If you win the card game but did not shoot average you donate the card money back in. 5 man team and after 4 weeks we have over $100 in the kitty. Going to be a great team party at the end this year. What ever is left over we split up among the team members.

The problem lies in establishing your average(after 9 games) in a league where there is a drop rule. The dilemna is that you want to do your best, but you don't want to hurt the team if you start off red-hot as a bowler with an ability to average 195 and you have an average after 3 weeks of 235. What do you do when your avg drops below 230?

Let me give you my example. My entering avg this season was 187 (due to injuries). In week 1, I shot 672 (224 avg). Tonight we are bowling the team who won the league last season. The guy I'm going head-to-head with averages over 230. what would you do?
