Push or Step ** HELP **
« on: December 08, 2003, 01:03:07 PM »
I've got some slight timing issues that have to do with the push away, my problem is that I step before I push which I believe causes me to step faster and throws my timing out, I've looked at some vids I have of the pros bowling and it seems that they push ever so slightly before they step, my question is "Is it correct to push before you step or do you step before you push???"

Ok are you talking about the differences between a 4-step and 5-step approach?

Typically in a 4-step approach you push away at the same time as you lead off with your right foot.

In a 5-step you take a stutter step with your left foot, and then into your push-away in time with your right foot on the second step.

I'm neither good, nor consistent, which is why I bowl.

I had the opposite problem, was pushing away before taking my first step, which was giving me early timing (ball getting to line too soon).  So, to fix it, I have to think "Step first, then push", which results in the hand and foot starting together.

The general consensus is that, in today's game, slightly late timing is better than slightly early timing, so stepping before pushing isn't so bad.  If you've completed your first step before moving the ball, then you'll be way too late.

Try thinking "Push first, then step", and see if that gets you back in time.

Define "correct timing".

I was dealing with this about two months ago. This may or may not apply to you. I found that it wasnt so much the push away as much as when the ball dropped into its swing path. I have a five step approach and I just had to make sure that the ball would drop into its swing path on/with the second step. The moment I connected with this (aprox. one month ago) my avg. has gone back up to where it should be.
