Lane Transition
« on: February 16, 2009, 10:49:27 AM »
Alrighty folks, some background:  You may have seen my posts the past few months about my struggles during my journey from 5 steps down to 4 in my approach.  Well, things are turning around very well for me:  the last month I'm averaging almost 215 in my league, I came in 45th in my county tournament (out of 220, on a sport pattern) which I'm very proud of, and I've been feeling much better in general both physically and mentally.

During these past weeks where I'm bowling much better, I've noticed the toughest part for me is reading the transition.  It always starts the same, I'll leave some ringing ten pins.  The mids burn up a little and everything is almost exactly the same for me except my ball will pick up a hair sooner. I have a VERY difficult time figuring this out, so my first question is:  how can you tell if your ball is reading the lane only inches sooner?  I don't have the trained eye to tell.

My second question is:  what's a better way to attack transition?  I've gone about it 2 different ways, and both have been successful.  The first way:  tilt my wrist to work the inside of the ball more, creating more side roll and delaying the reaction.  The second way:  move left with the same wrist position.  What do you folks do when your lanes are transitioning?

Thanks for the help in advance guys!  And thanks for the encouragement and wisdom in the past - it's paying off in spades now

Why change if you have been successful?

Coping with transition depends on exactly how the lanes are changing, and that comes from knowing your equipment and your game. Both of the approaches you've tried can work, and have for you, but anything which changes the way your ball moves down the lane can be an effective tool.

I, personally have had some good results with lofting the ball in the recent past so think that that's a technique worth looking into. I also like to play with wrist/finger positions to change the amount of revs/earliness of roll/axis rotation/axis tilt, with varying degrees of success.

I think that different bowlers will be able to utilise some of these techniques better or worse and it's up to you to work out which are best for you, and more importantly, when to use them.

Second that, even though I'd prefer the release change, not a deeper line - but it depends on the lanes and how everything feels. I spoiled a better ranking because I stuck to the release change approach for 1 game in a tournament last year. The deeper line worked much better, but it was too late...
