Lanes
« on: October 16, 2009, 02:29:12 AM »
I am bowling at a house and struggling. The shot is this. If you throw the ball out about the 10 board the ball rolls out and never recovers. If I throw it in the ball takes off. I am using the following balls. Any help would be appreciated on how can I bowl on this.

Hammer Black Widow Pearl - Polished. - Drilled to go long
Hammer Black Widow - Sanded - Drilled to hook early
Hammer Black Widow Sting - Sanded - Drilled to go long and snap.

All of these when I throw the ball out they either roll out or take off on the brooklyn side when I get the ball in. I tried playing straight down 10. I tried hooking across the lane. NOTHING WORKS. Any ideas?

the only thing i see to suggest is something weak and smooth. I like the sound of an Ebonite Boom for you or a Hammer Razyr. Both of those should work well once you get used to them

All of My balls are layed out strong. One is pin under and one is pin to the right of the pinky. I have basically everything long and strong. Except the Original Black Widow. That is too hook early.

I see someone suggested a Cherry Vibe. I read the review on that. That ball is for medium to dry. The lanes I am bowling on are like a reverse block to Me. I throw the ball out and it rolls out. I throw it in and it takes off. When I throw the ball out on 10 the ball comes back with rings of oil. I just cannot get a ball to turn up down the lanes.

LMFAO, I'll bet there was big $$$$$$ signs in the proshop operators eyes when Boos asked for a ball to go long and snap

With this ball its actually understandable.  The sting comes from the factory @ 2000 abralon which aint exactly shiny. Mines drilled  4.75x4 and on a 39ft THS gets a lot of lenght and has quite the backend.

why suggest a fast?

the t-road pearl was always compared to (by STORM) a black widow pearl.
which has the r2s pearlized shell. the fast has the same shell just less core.
so how is it less ball then the widow pearl???

i personally would go with a weak layout on a cherry vibe.

So far I am leaning towards a Hammer Razyr.

Boos,

Take your Red Widow Pearl and shine the crap out of it.  Use carnuba wax if you have too and try moving outside the 2nd arrow and going down and in.  The other option if that dont work is move left and try swinging it out and back in.  I dont know how you throw whether you are a high rev player or not but judging from the arsenal you have and the fact you pursue strong layouts leads me to believe you are not a high rev guy.  It also lends itself to the fact that you say if you swing it wide beyond the 2nd arrow it rolls out and doesnt overcome which is also typical of a low rev player but since you didnt say i am merely presuming.  I carry basically the same arsenal as you except I have a BW bite drilled aggressively for heavier oil.  My original BW and the Pearl are drilled for length and shined.  The combo you have on the Sting seems odd to me because if you want a ball to go long and snap, you generally dont dull the coverstock but maybe there was a reason you did it.  I have a Columbia Action Packed that is drilled for length and was shined but the ball was very squirty, so I basically knocked the shine off it and dulled it but didnt sand it.  It now rolls a bit more evenly and doesnt squirt on the backend.  I would try a heavy shine on the Pearl first to get it longer on the lane and experiement some different spot and stance positions and see if you can find something.  You may need to try and vary your speed to give the ball time to read the lane if its not coming back from the outside.  The balls are all good and versatile balls and can be tweaked as needed.  Keep at it...

I would try a conventional grip alley ball and throw
it right at he head pin.  Watch videos of Andy
Varipappa on you tube.

Honestly, with the cost of bowling, I would quit
and go to another alley if I could.  It does
not seem to be enjoyable, bowling on those lane
conditions.

Is the ball really rolling out or does this house acually have some OB. Not everyone bowls on the great wall.

Thanks for the nice post. I am a low to mid rev player. I have tried moving in and playing that way but once the Ball gets to the 10 board it rolls out. I tried playing straight. It still rolls out. That is why I am so confused.

What is OB? The house is known for a decent shot but not now.

There has been some pretty sound advice given already but I would like to add my input.

As every bowler should know there are 3 key factors to bowling ball motion skid, hook, and roll. Having the ball burn up means the ball is not skidding enough, changing direction quickly, and the roll just rolls out instead of being a strong steady motion to the pocket. What you said you are seeing at this center is the ball burning up at the 10 board no matter where you are, which to me means there is an abundance of friction in the track area at the center you bowl. So that tells me you need to slow down the reaction time by either weaker bowling balls or weaker hand positions. The balls you have right now are simply over reacting to the friction you are seeing. So either tame the hand position or tame the equipment.

My understanding is the Razyrs usually just come with one pin to cg distance because of it being a 3 piece core.

Hope that helps!

Boos I can't comment on the Razyr but the Power Groove will have enough on the back end. Just because it is considered an entry level ball don't let that fool you. With the PowerKoil 17 coverstock it has more then enough energy on the back end. I am by far no expert when it comes to everything in bowling but I would highly recomend you taking a look at something similar to the Power Groove. Best advice I can give is ask your local pro shop person if you have further questions after all of this advice on here. All of us can suggest or have great advice on here but talking to your local pro shop person would be the best thing since he may know what exactly you are dealing with. Also he can watch you a little to if possible.
