New footage of "Maximum Bob"
« on: June 17, 2013, 10:56:46 PM »
Well, new video of Robert Smith has come out online.  He's looking great throwing in this clip from Asia:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OfHjPqp9Xs

Not sure if this is one of his new Element balls.  But if you love seeing him wheel it, you'll love watching this.

Then there is this new footage of Smith bowling on what appears to be older wooden lanes.  This is probably the straightest I've seen him play since he beat Duke at the 2000 US Open.

Since bowling in that part of the world is huge and in the U.S. its a side show why would you continue to struggle on the PBA tour here for very little cash when you can have more else where? Bowling companies release around 1/3 more bowling balls to those countries vs here. That market is booming this market is not.

So why exactly is bowling doing so well in other countries and sucks here?

Same reason why certain types of music/bands  are popular in other countries and are not as popular here. Different sports have different following in other countries baseball is big in japan not so much in europe though. Soccer is huge in other places here though most can take it or leave it. Hockey is big time in europe and canada in the U.S. not as big.

why should bowling be exempt from this???

Bowling is like everything else, it has its ups and downs. Right now its down, but that doesn't mean in a few years it won't be back up. Frankly around here, the biggest thing holding it back seems to be facilities and equipment that could use a major overhaul. Everytime they build new lanes the place is packed.

I know the one I currently bowl in needs a serious overhaul in both equipment and just the overall look of the place. Everything about it says its run down, from the touch screens not half working, to the holes in the bathroom walls.

My local lanes need far better managers than they have. Can't even get them to get a league going with someone else willing to do most of the work.

Luckily we do have some pretty nice lanes I need to drive my butt to again in Columbia, Smyrna and Nashville,TN.

The houses are getting all rundown, but the prices keep going up.  Easy to quit when the house is a poop hole and you get charged a premium price.

All pretty good reasons lol
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

He didn't look too sad at Nationals. He bowled during my team squad and took over 5k in brackets.

Yeah well my comments weren't about his actual bowling, and maybe he's just a ham like Voss was, just seemed sad that he had to resort to being a sideshow in a foreign country to make a living.  He looks really good in this video though, maybe he won't get back on the PBA, but it looks like all his physical issues he was dealing with have been taken care of.  Throwing the ball really well.

Actually I believe he lives and bowls over there, been there for a few years I think.

He lives in Hong Kong.

He left HK for more than a year...

If a guy can make a living while doing something he loves he is a lucky man.

I think it's better for him to be "social" with the bowlers than to act like a prima dona.  Perhaps there are sponsors for him overseas because he is interacting with others and seemingly having fun, while that door would likely be closed if he were acting like a jerk.

Watching a bunch of videos from him over in Japan or wherever, it's almost embarassing.  It's like he's play acting or trying to act like a sideshow freak or something.  He's really hamming stuff up and soaking in all the attention, or at least that's how it comes off.  Pretty sad actually.

I cannot believe how you constantly and consistently mis-read people.  He has a group of Japanese bowlers sharing the lanes with him and are obviously in awe of how he throws the ball.  He is gracious in accepting their congratulations on a strike, kids with them when leaves a spare, laughs with them when he gets away with a shot that shouldn't have carried.  What planet are you from anyways?
Long Gone also posts the honest truth which is why i respect him. He posts these things knowing some may not like it.

I wasn't talking about this video at all, I specifically said a bunch of videos.  This video is in fact rather impressive, and in it he acts nothing like he does in other older videos.  I can post links to the specific videos I'm referring to.  At the very least he's very sheepish in the other videos or not quite sure how to accept their attention.

Friend met him at bowl expo a day ago and said he was super nice and talked with him for quite a bit. RS is a competitor, especially when you watch his PBA vids. He was out to win and took back shots and breaks hard.

Looks like he is having a lot of fun bowling in a league setting or pro-am event.

He throws the ball good no doubt about. Amazing what you can do when your not injured.
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

Well and sometimes it takes people years to grow into their fame and recognition. He probably struggled with it for a while and is now more at ease. It does tend to happen the older you get.

It was different watching videos from him over there.  He looked completely fine watching him for several years when he was on the PBA over here, actually got to meet him a couple times.  Then he got hurt and struggled with that for a couple years, then he moved overseas, and I didn't mean that HE was sad, I meant his situation was sad, and yeah, maybe he just didn't know how to handle being the single center of attention.  Maybe he didn't intend to be act hammy, but a few videos looked hammy.  Super glad to see he's back and doing well.  Either way, THIS is classic, if just for the caption.  (and there's a couple instances in here showing what I'm talking about)
