Thumb pitch ?
« on: August 17, 2007, 01:42:09 PM »
What are the effects of Left lateral and right lateral pitches? For instance i currently use 1/4 left and 1/8 reverse pitch. If i switched to 0 left/right but still kept the 1/8 reverse pitch what would i notice ?

If you're still able to clear the ball cleanly you might notice a small change in axis tilt.

Proper lateral thumb pitch depends on the thumb's hinge angle.  IF 1/4 L is your proper pitch, when you go to 0 you will develop a friction area on the left side of your thumb that will either blister or callous.  You will probably also have a hanging problem.  --  JohnP

It takes a lot of experience and "reading" hundreds of hands.  Basically you're checking how the thumb hinges in the lateral directions and trying to provide pitches that allow it to enter/exit the hole with little or no lateral tension.  There are tests such as the Coke bottle test or picking up a pencil with your thumb and fingers that give some guidance, but I can tell more by manually manipulating the customer's thumb than by using any test.  --  JohnP
